I liked Pegg's comparison with Doctor Who and think he's right when he says it's reimagined and reinvigorated.

Let's hope that the end result isn't quite as manic as David Tennant's performance.

I never said I spoke for all of Trekdom.
I just said it doesn't sound like a prequel to me.
Pegg is just saying whatever he can to appeal to Trek fans, IMO.

Certainly, he's saying whatever he can to those of us fans who don't want remake, even if he has to lie.

The more I hear these guys talk about the movie, the more convinced I am that the plot involves creating an alternate timeline via time travel. Now that not be a straight reboot/remake/reimagining like the new BSG but it still is one nonetheless and Pegg is lying through his teeth.

It's their way of doing a reboot whiling attempting to placate longtime fans at the same time.

This is probably what Orci meant awhile back on Trekmovie.com when asked about his thoughts on the various Trek series and the topic of Enterprise came up and he felt that they were partners. Berman and Braga probably created the Temporal Cold War to explain any continuity errors that show had.

Even if it is a "reboot" not a thing wrong with that, actually that'd be my preference. Though if they can create a storyline that lets one existing universe bud off another that's just as well. None of this is inherently bad. My one and ONLY concern is if I'm ENTERTAINED or not. Star Trek "canon" isn't sacred.

To me it is, but if you're going to reboot the damn thing just do it already and be done with it.
Don't get cute with the time travel bullshit.

If it were, then Abrams wouldn't have made such a big issue early on out of the fact that this movie is NOT "Star Trek XI," but rather simply "Star Trek."
In fairness, Paramount dropped the numbers after The Undiscovered Country.
True enough. Although, they still continued to add something to the title. No Trek movie, even the first, was ever simply "Star Trek."

This movie IS a reboot. We simply don't know to what extent yet.

I doubt it will be a reimagined movie to the extent of, say, BSG or Lost in Space. But, I suspect it will be more than could rightfully be called a mere prequel or continuation, either.

Everybody's entitled to their opinion. My question has always been, if you're not going to give deference to the canon of the franchise, why bother to work with the franchise at all? Why not simply create something original with a similar story line?

This question has nothing to do with Star Trek, specifically. I have long asked this question about remakes.

The Bionic Woman, for example. The show shared NOTHING with the original other than the name of the lead character and the fact that she was part cyborg. So, what was the point? Why not simply rename the lead character and avoid the whole reimagined mess.

If you don't have enough faith in your material to stand on it's own without leaching off of somebody else's work, maybe you shouldn't be doing it at all.
