Romulan Civil War?

I haven't seen a topic about this yet, but it certainly seems after the events of both Articles of the Federation and the Destiny trilogy that the situation between the Romulan Star Empire (RSE) and the Imperial Romulan State (IRS, what a great abbreviation! ) is continuing to deteriorate.

How long do you think it will be (if at all) until there is a full-blown Romulan civil war?

You mean what's happened already doesn't qualify? I thought the schism between the two Romulan states was the outcome of a civil war.

I was talking about armed conflict. There has been some, but it has been relatively minor so far. I meant full-blown war.

I hope not... The losses already, and I don't know how many Remans there can possibly be... hopefully they'll at least make peace now, or a "not war tho not friends"

If they go to full scale war and the IRS wins, that would definitely change things.

It would seem like the IRS does not have the military capability that the RSE does, however...(maybe I'm wrong?)

Haven't we had enough war stories already? I mean, we've had the Dominion War and the Borg invasion, and a couple centuries back we have the Romulan War just starting up in the books. What do we need another war for?

It might not be for awhile.

Definitely seconded. After too many more wars there'd be nothing left to rebuild.

I don't believe that the Federation would be involved.

Erm, no, and I'm not sure why you'd think that. No, Donatra seceded from the empire, and took about half of Romulan territory (and about half of the military) with her. She did so without a single shot being fired (as established in Articles of the Federation, and reinforced in A Singular Destiny, both books that you've read, Christopher.... ).

And the Imperial Romulan State is in much better economic shape than the Romulan Star Empire as of the events of Destiny.

Re: Romulan Civil War?

I kind of see where Christopher is coming from: the government was slaughtered in a coup, Shinzon takes over, Donatra betrays Shinzon, factions are established, Tal Aura takes over on Romulus, Baerg threatens Romulus with his military forces before being assassinated by Tal Aura in a massacre, Donatra kills her own co-conspirator before he can turn on her, everybody sabotages the Remans, including one admiral who had alledgedly gone rogue with his wing but is secretly acting for Tal Aura, and finally negotiations between factions break down and Donatra seceeds. "War" might be an exagerration, but certainly there's a fair amount of civil strife in the months leading up to the partition of the Romulan Empire.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

If the events of The Empty Chair fit into the novel chronology, then Donatra looks like she's filling the role of Ael: A military leader, hostile to the more objectionable policies of the government, who later breaks away from the government's authority to establish another authority under her own charismatic rule. The comparison fails in some areas--the role that she played in the original coup, the way in which Braeg's execution makes the Tal'Aura-Donatra contest personal, and the formation of a competing government instead of an attempt to overthrow the standing government--but there are probably enough points of similarity to make people think. Maybe the IRS' space is home to a large number of Ship-Clan worlds and communities?

Re: Romulan Civil War?

Trent's pretty much pegged it -- I was referring to the extensive civil strife that took place between Shinzon's coup and Donatra's secession. Maybe that wasn't a declared war, but I'd think it would be enough to satisfy anyone's interest in stories about internal Romulan conflict and violence.

Not to mention that Donatra and the Romulan Imperial State had the foresight to take the Romulan Empire's major agricultural worlds with them when they seceded.
