How's the Summer Movie Season going for you?

I saw WALL-E last night, it was absolutely incredible and probably my new favorite movie on all time. This summer movie season's reputation just skyrocketed in my mind.

Shoot. I haven't seen any summer flicks yet. I'm hoping to see The Dark Knight though, I know that's one I can't pass up.

I usually see movies when they arrive at the $1.00 theatre. When I have the cash, I go see them when they are new. That's what happens when you can't find a better job then retail

So far the only movies I've seen this year are Rambo and Harold & Kumar. I think I may actually go see Speed Racer today, too. Sounds corny, I know, but I still want to see how bad it's gonna be

Well hell for a $1 I'd go also. We haven't had a $1 theater in the Nashville, heck even the greater Nashville area in about 10 years. When it went out of business then it was the $1.50 cinema at that.

Incidentally, My Winnipeg is the highlight of the year so far. Best new film I've seen in theatres. I'd like to call it one of my favourite documentaries but this rather strange, hallucinatory inner monologue with its copious silent-film-esque photography and sometimes fanciful recreations, making Winnipeg seem like some enveloping dreamworld, barely qualifies. I've seen the label 'docu-fantasia' bandied about, that one fits the best. Recommended for fans of silent film; Sergei Eisenstein in particular.

Well, I saw Speed Racer today at my local dollar theatre. Not a bad movie, actually. From the previews the film looked like it would really be terrible, but I felt like it wasn't. Now maybe if I saw the movie at full-price, I may think twice about the film. The movie had a lot of potential, and it was entertaining. It was a bit cartoonish-- and slow moving at times. But the characters really brought out the movie-- especially Speed's kid brother and the chimp. (I forget the names ) And the chick who played Trixie was eye-candy, also...

So far, the only one that has impressed me at all is Iron Man. The characterization is strong enough to carry the rest of the movie, which is pretty flimsy.

Indiana Jones & the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was half-decent but certainly not worth waiting 19 years for. I don't think I could in good conscience put it on the shelf next to the other 3.

The Incredible Hulk gave me think that maybe Hulk (2003) wasn't that bad.

All the funny parts of Get Smart were already in the ads. Seeing the actual movie is pointless.

Sex & the City was OK but suffered from too much mid-movie moping.

Prince Caspian was totally forgettable.

Wanted is visually entertaining fluff; not worth paying full price when I already own The Matrix & Night Watch on DVD. Jolie & Freeman are good but James MacAvoy is completely in over his head doing over the top stuff like this.

The Strangers was scary but that might have had something to do with being in a theater filled with about 5-dozen shrieking women that sound like a cross between Fay Wray & Jennifer Hudson.

Overall, I've been underwhelmed but I expect The Dark Knight to almost single-handedly turn it around. (For what it's worth, I'm also looking forward to Wall-E, The X-Files, The Mummy, & Hellboy II.)

The last movie that I saw at a cheap theater in Nashville was Frequency back in 2000 in Antioch. I was working at the Blockbuster in Fieldstone Farms when the one in Cool Springs closed down around that same time. I was supposed to have taken the kids that I was babysitting to see The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and it closed even though the movies were announced for the week that it closed. I do miss going to a cheap movie theater to see movies that I only had a passing interest in.

The cinema I go to have a subscription card, you pay £12 a month, and for that you can go as many times per month you like. That's why I see pretty much any thing.

So far, for the summer of 2008, I have seen the following:

Harold & Kumar Go to Guantanamo Bay (F = fail)
Iron Man (A = excellent)
Speed Racer (B = good)
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (B for the name brand, C for actual content of the film)
You Don't Mess with the Zohan (A = and, yes I am biased! )
Kung Fu Panda (A = excellent, and I typically don't like CGI animated films)
The Incredible Hulk (B = good, but I give Ang Lee's HULK from 2003 a grade of A)
Get Smart (B or C, B for Steve Carrell and Anne Hathaway's performances, C for the "passable" film)
Wall-E (A = excellent; perhaps the best film I have seen in 2008, or at least this summer, so far)
Hellboy II: The Golden Army (As a Christian, I never want to watch this film ever again. Ironically, it was one of my Christian church friends who made me watch it, though...)
