The Doctor & The Enterprise - New Cover Art

A discussion over in the TOS forum went on a brief tangent involving the fanfic story "The Doctor and the Enterprise", and I remembered that the one thing that always bugged me about that story was the illustrations. A link was provided to the latest version currently available on Amazon, and things have only gotten worse.

So, I felt compelled to cook up my own...

The story itself doesn't appear to be available online, but as stated above, it's available at Amazon.com.

Re: The Doctor & The Enterprise - New Cover Art

Thanks! I don't know why that didn't show up when I searched for it.

UPDATE:

I'm currently editing the text, mainly to remove some bizzare spacing and the occasional typo, but also to cook up the occasional mssing sentence. I may have to stick an "Edited by" credit on this one by the time I'm finished.

I bought the original... WAY back in the day.
I really prefer the cover you created.

Re: The Doctor & The Enterprise - New Cover Art

Just got through editing the text from that link, and managed to whittle it down from 114 pages down to 78, almost all from getting rid of that weird spacing. Also corrected a few typos, cobbled up a replacement for a missing sentence, tweaked some of the clumsier syntax and grammatical issues (mostly use of commas and inappropriate capitalizations), and reworking a bit of technobabble here and there.

UPDATE:

With a new title page and foreword from Yours Truly, the page count is now at 82. Hopefully, the addition of clipart won't push the final page count above 90.

Yes, this project just took off down a whole new tangent.

Re: The Doctor & The Enterprise - New Cover Art

I've had most of the story for many years, since I bought a fanzine in the late 80's that included it (Enterprise). Never did find the first issue that contained the start of the story, but found that link online some years back...

As to the story, it's actually rather well done and has it's funny moments. Most fan 'cross-over' stories tend to be very amateurish (and often unreadable). This one stands out - even with the grammatical errors.

Re: The Doctor & The Enterprise - New Cover Art

The editing is bordering on a rewrite at this point, but so far, I'm keeping it to finding better ways of saying the same thing, throwing in some paragraph breaks to cut down on the massive paragraphs, making the dialogue flow better, snipping bits that no longer fit the official record (like the reference to Kirk not being a horseman) and upping the dramatic tension.

This is rather fun.

All done, with the polish at least.

Who wants to read it?
