Like so many of the actors reprising the roles from the original series, Zoe Saldana
was honored to meet the person who originated her role.
As reported by News Blaze, Saldana, who is taking on the role of Uhura originated by Nichelle Nichols, was able to meet Nichols in person. "Yes, I did meet her, and I was so humbled to have met such an icon," said Saldana. "She's an amazing woman and a strong human being. That was very interesting, as was working with Leonard Nimoy. I felt like the entire cast and myself were honored to be filling in the shoes of the original [Starship] Enterprise [cast]. We really hope we don't disappoint."
Nichols herself is impressed about Star Trek XI according to an interview with Jonja.net, where she dropped what might be considered a story hint. "I thought it was fantastic, because it's a prequel," she said, of the story. "It is not like they're replacing Uhura from the point in time we left of with the films, which would be their right to do. Also I might hurt them, bodily [if they did so]. But this was a prequel, the months before, the time before, and ends with our going off on that five year mission where no man or woman had gone before. And I heard it's marvelous."
A trip to the set was enjoyable for Nichols due to the reaction of the actors working on the set when they saw her. "I got a call from J.J. and he invited me to lunch to ask me how I felt," she said. "He did the courtesy, the honor of doing that. I thought that was just unbelievable. Then I went on the set and they were shooting...and when I went on the set, I was being very quiet and I'm walking through and all of a sudden everything stops. I mean the actors just stopped in place. They saw me walk in and they were in their lines, and went like 'and sir we have the...'. And that was such an honor bestowed upon me. Because I went 'Oh, I’m sorry!' and then that broke the thing and everyone laughed. It was very, very funny."
