What you really have to look out for is a producer saying "all the fans are going to love this because it's perfect for the fans" - that guy would be talking through his hat. All the fans don't love anything.

Isn't THAT the truth!

I thought the "Kirk-Spock" fights used to be bad. Then we got several more Trek series and the fighting really began!

That was my thought too.

It's like JJ is panicking that the fucking film is STILL a year away and feels he has to put his face in twice a week, just so we don't forget.

Bullshit.

Re: 'Star Trek XI' Made For Movie Lovers

That's not at all so - the problem is that fans don't pay any attention to context.

John Cho says a lot about "Star Trek" for a few days because he's promoting another project - "Harold and Kumar" - and reporters ask him about Trek.

Same for Simon Pegg when he was promoting "Run, Fat Boy, Run."

Abrams is promoting the DVD release of "Cloverfield." He gets asked about "Star Trek." He is not "putting his face in twice a week" except in the minds of folks who don't read the context.

I'm glad. personally I'm sick of the canon nazis and the whining about Abrahms. Make the movie to be fun first - after all its just a movie and tv franchise not the way to enlightenment with roddenberry as resident lama.

Any time we read science fiction.

Or the "news".

You guys are being too hard on Abrams. But he'll have the last laugh. Why? Because he's invented a genius business strategy! A movie that appeals to movie-goers! It's a golden idea, he should write a book about it.

I do find it interesting that one week, we hear from J.J. & Co. how much they're respecting both the source material and the fans who have supported the franchise for so long, then we hear that they're really making this movie for a mainstream audience, a movie that just happens to be Star Trek.

Yeah. We've got another year of vague commentary like this to look forward to.

Re: 'Star Trek XI' Made For Movie Lovers

As a communication major, I learned to look at all news from all angles. Some spin it one way, some spin it another, one is out of context this way, the other is out of context that way, people feel some of X and some of Y whether or not they feel more one way than another both exist...

... throw all that together, then, maybe I can figure out the truth.

The truth, IMO? JJ Abrams wants to make a movie faithful to Star Trek that will appeal to a general audience. He wants to alter the presentation instead of the concept, so that concept can become marketable again.

Most of the movies, TOS and TNG, wanted to make their entries understandable to the general audience (except TSFS which depends on your watching TWOK), which is also why the TNG movies didn't rely on audiences watching DS9 and VOY every week -- but making the movies stand-alone for the general audience and appealing to them are not the same thing.

Given its budget, the new movie not only has to be appealing to a general audience, its appeal has to reach an audience far wider than ever before.

Good points LG and I tend to agree that the truth is in there somewhere.

As I've said many, many times in these discussions since filming first started back in November, as long as this movie feels like TOS, I'll come away from the theater happy.

I'd just be happier if they had stuck to the original release date of this year.

That's a childish and over exaggerated comment to make.

Re: 'Star Trek XI' Made For Movie Lovers

Orci has suggested over at Trekmovie.com that as the one-year-to-release date is passed it would be natural and expected for the studio to begin doing a little bit more promotion for the film.

But it is true. There are some who are so wrapped up in canon, it ruins their enjoyment of the film.
