Viacom And Studios To Offer New Premium Channel

A new venture announced by Viacom and five studios is poised to compete for viewership and programming taking on Time Warner's HBO and CBS Corp.'s Showtime.

As reported by CNN Money.com, Viacom Inc. and five Hollywood studios, including: Paramount, Paramount Vintage, MGM, United Artists and Lionsgate, have come together to create both a television station and a video-on-demand service.

The new channel and service will begin in the fall of 2009, showing movies and television series including Star Trek and the various Star Trek series, Cloverfield, Iron Man and others. The five studios have a collection of hundreds of television shows and thousands of movies.

According to an article at comingsoon.net, Bud Grey, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Paramount Pictures, "Grey said, "For close to a century, Paramount has produced and distributed some of America's best-known and beloved films - a tradition that continues today, with an outstanding lineup set through 2009. That commitment to great entertainment is matched by Paramount's focus on creating new and innovative platforms that offer more access and flexibility to consumers. We look forward to launching this historic premium entertainment service with a strong slate that includes new releases like Cloverfield, Iron Man, and Star Trek alongside Paramount's legendary library.""

The new venture may indicate friction between Viacom Inc. and CBS Corp.'s Showtime channel, according to Reuters. Sumner Redstone is both chairman and controlling shareholder of both Viacom Inc. and CBS Corp. The CEO of CBS Corp., Leslie Moonves was briefed on the plans for the new venture on Sunday.

As long a Sumner Redstone is running Viacom it and Paramount will continue to make these lousy business decisions. UPN failed, the CBS merger failed and this new cable channel will fail as well.

Like I said in the other thread in General Trek, It would be amazing if Paramount decided to produce a new Star Trek series and put it on this new service. This could also work out very well for Stargate Universe since MGM is in on this too.

Re: Viacom And Studios To Offer New Premium Channel

It always makes me shake my head when I see any kind of premium, "pay" service that advertises ten year old tv shows and the three big blockbuster movies of the past six months.

Who the fuck are the rubes who pay for this shit?

If I want to watch one of these I probably

a. already HAVE watched it a decade ago
b. own it or rented it on DVD
c. downloaded it

Who are the mutants who HAVE NOT seen TNG in part or full and yet STILL want to? Who are the suckers who are going to splurge on an extra premium pay channel, especially in these economic times, for a movie they can rent from Blockbuster for a few bucks?

I just WOULD NOT do this and I don't understand people who do.

Great...so how about bringing back new episodes of ENTERPRISE as a draw for this new channel?

I would really hate it if a new Star Trek series is only available on a premium channel--I'd never see it unless its reruns were aired in syndication or on a basic cable outlet like SCI-FI or whatever...

I think going on a cable channel as opposed to a broadcast network could be a great, great thing for Star Trek.

They see which way the wind is blowing at CW and need something to replace it with, is my guess.

I agree that a new Trek series should be on a cable channel, but I wouldn't want it on a premium cable channel though. I'd rather wait for it to be rebroadcast somewhere else.
