It still looks great, but I liked a couple of the "roll bars" that you had earlier. I especially liked the version where the body had ridges like a Saturn V.

Re: Star Ship Polaris

The detailing is continually in flux right now; some of the "Saturn V" ridges may come back.

Re: Star Ship Polaris

Coming along nicely, but the softness of the ring just feels out of place with the rest of the design. Particularly in the back view where it makes a sort of heart-shape. I've had a few ideas I've been working on but the computer I model on has been down the last few days and needs a format, as soon as I get it back up I'll take some renders of my progress.

I love those textures. Ultimate retro-coolness, with an ever-so subtle hint of TMP aplomb.

A true retro SCI FI space ship, very cool.

Wow. very nice. Awhile back some of us at work were discussing old movies that haven't been remade, and "The Forbidden Planet" came up. Something like this would be absolutely perfect. Great work Aridas.

Re: Star Ship Polaris

There were plans to remake "Forbidden Planet" some years ago, and Syd Mead did some production design for it. It looked pretty cool.

You pretty much have to accept remakes for what they are, though - the film probably would have upset a lot of fans of the original, but it was being planned for a different audience in a different era.

Some of the casting discussed was - seriously - Anthony Hopkins as Morbius and Sharon Stone as Alta. Along with the filmmakers' remarks that it would be "less psychologically naive" than the original, you can get some idea where it was going.

I've always thought FP would make a good springboard for a TV series.

Re: Star Ship Polaris

Very nice. Thanks for the keel shots. You did what I was hoping wouldnt happen. You made the cowling that is on the dorsal symmetrical all around. I was hoping that on ventral side it would curve forward to the bow to completely encompass the engines. That extra space could also be used for cargo storage besides looking cool IMO. But then again, that probably wouldn't match the aesthetics that you are going for. Just my two cents.

Thanks for the suggestions.

A small update:

Just modifications to the undersaucer detail, a new version of the "rollbar" and some placeholders indicating where I think the missiles/weapons will be mounted.

Any vessel that wants to call itself a starship absolutely NEEDS to carry some ass-kicking weaponry. Without it, you might as well be flying a dress...

Re: Star Ship Polaris

And yet, remarkably, the original Enterprise on TOS had no visible weapons emplacements on the hull.

The larger a ship is, I guess, the smaller the weapons details visible on the outside may be. A modern submarine is pretty smooth-looking - everything's protected behind hatches. So are most renderings I've seen of the Honorverse ships.

Our ship is a little smaller - a patrol boat, say, as against a carrier - so the guns will be a little more obvious. They'll also be fewer and less powerful, but such ships aren't designed to fight capital vessels.

Re: Star Ship Polaris

As long as the ass-kicking weaponry is there, I guess it's okay to hide it...
