We need to see more of those.

Shatner as Kirk is why I watched TOS. He could be facing death and still looked like he was having fun. But I was also a teenager then. I'm 47 now. And, in the words of the late George Harrison, all things must pass.

I also watched TNG and DS9 with equal enthusiasism to TOS. And they were Shatnerless ("Trials and Tribblelations" notwithstanding).

I'm gonna cut myself a bunch of slack (not saying I'll need it, but just in case) and enjoy the hell out of Pine's Kirk.

I haven't been this excited about Trek -- with or without Shatner -- since the production of TMP was announced.

Yes all things must pass! Including Star Trek? Why not just enjoy the wonder that was TOS and the resultant films?

It wouldn't be shown 40 YEARS ON without the acting powers of the Shat IMO. What other programme (show) is?

I don't want Star Trek XI without the Sh&t

...oh the ShAt...

The Cage, DS9, SCE, IKS Gorkon, Stargazer, and the Lost Era have been without Kirk.

TOS/TAS has Spock, Bones, Scotty, Nyota, Hikaru, and Pavel.

Star Trek XI has Kirk.

What's the problem?

oh wait...

You don't mean the Kirk character you mean Star Trek XI doesn't have William Shatner in it.

Re: I don't want Star Trek XI without the Shat

As I said before, originally I was NOT a Shat fan.

But the more I watch TOS/TAS/films 1-6 the more I see Shat held them together. Other Star Trek is great - and make a film with Archer as the centre - but replacing Shat as Kirk, I think is wrong.

Abrams is taking a chance. But as has been posted here in dozens of threads over the last months, there's a lot still to be said about young Kirk. It's nice to see the character revisited. No pressure, by the way Mr. Pine. No pressure.

Yes, or they could use Alvin and the Chipmunks.

I'm a persuaded Shat-lover, I used to think he was over blown and hammy. But the more I watch, the more I think Shat WAS Trek. More so than my idol Leonard Nimoy. Anyone can be Spock, but only Shat can be Kirk IMO.
Well, I guess you are about to find out that NOT only Shat can be Kirk.

I would urge keeping an open mind. You never know - you might just enjoy yourself regardless.

Oh, I will go and see it and I hope I will enjoy it and be proven wrong! But we don't live in the 1960s, and society in the 1960s and its positive attitude made Trek. We're too cynical in the 200+ age and I predict a sentimental, consensus-driven, angst-ridden Kirk, rather than the dashing pioneer that Shat portrayed in the original series.

Amen, brother! And this comes from a TOS fan.

Roxana said:
I agree, I'd rather none of the original cast, than just Nimoy wheeled out. To take my thoughts further, Kirk and Spock was fuelled by the Shat/Nimoy dynamic: just having Nimoy won't work. (I haven't seen any post-TOS/TAS/films Star Trek though, being an original series fan)
My thoughts exactly. I'd rather have Shatner in the new movie than Nimoy.

You're going to have to accept Star Trek without Shatner eventually. Why not start now?

You mean you don't want to watch Star Trek anymore? Then don't. Nobody's got a gun to your head, right?

I'm all psyched up to see Shatnerless Trek for the next several decades. But most of the Trek I've enjoyed has been Shatnerless, so it's not going to be very jarring for me.

The essence of Star Trek depends on no one character or actor. The closest essential element that Trek has is the Enterprise, but even then, my favorite series was DS9, Enterpriseless. The essence of Trek is not a person or a thing, it is an IDEA. And it can easily continue forever.

Good thing I don't give a Shat.

We should probably stop this now.

Re: I don't want Star Trek XI without the Shat

I disagree with the Vorta... sad as it is, I use Star Trek TOS to make my management decisions at work. Kirk was the quintessence of the assertive leader: approachable, listened to all sides, then made his own decision and took the flak. Which to my mind is an effective business management model.

The other Star Treks have merit (and my boss at work and I debate them incessantly) but even he admits, Kirk (Shatner) cut it over Picard every time in assertiveness and pure bloody mindedness.

I rely on Shatner's Kirk to help me in life (I'm sad) and I don't see how someone younger than me, who hasn't been involved in Star Trek for 40+ years and doesn't understand the relationships, priorities and nuances could deal with a major character like Kirk following the Shat's example.

But my colleagues tell me I think too deeply about this, so maybe I do.
