I gave up, over there. I was half-expecting a post that someone's head had exploded in rage over the "canon-violation" of (the potential of) a ground-based shipyard.

I think it looks neat. Judging from the trailer, one could make the claim that the 1701 had two major refits (from its as built appearence in the movie into the Cage variant, and from TOS to the TMP variant) and two minor refits (from the Cage version to the WNMHB version and from the WNMHGB version to the series version). It will be interesting to see the full version in the movie to make a more thorough assesment of the Enterprise's history.

Re: Enterprise Pic

I doubt they'll bother with that minutiae. I think this film will hew to the basic outlines of Trek and even some of its more notable lore but I doubt it will try very hard to conform to what we've been watching for the last 40 years. And that's... okay.

The way I see it, regardless of what Abrams says, this new Trek is no more related to TOS than the Batman of DC Comics is related to Tim Burton's or Chris Nolan's or Paul Dini's. Looked at that way, I'm happy they restrained themselves as much as they did.

In short: Aye, she's a bonny lass but she is [/i]not[/i] the Enterprise as commanded by Kirk as played by a young William Shatner any more than the Tumbler is the Batmobile driven by Adam West.

As I've been insisting since the description of the teaser came out, it doesn't mean that the Enterprise was built on the ground. It's an artistic re-introduction for Joe Six-Pack to the Star Trek universe; something that gradually transitions from the familiar (construction, welding, that sort of thing), adding some equally familiar space exploration ambiance (voices of NASA, JFK, Neal Armstrong) as it transitions into something the general public might not be all that familiar with (Spock's voice, the Enterprise). It has no bearing on the final product as everyone and their cousin involved with the film insist that the teaser was specially-made and doesn't use anything JJ Abrams and company have shot for the movie. These people flipping out over the Enterprise allegedly not being built in space need to seriously chill out before they give themselves an aneurysm.

Re: Enterprise Pic

A metaphor is how I choose to interpret it, albeit it a very literal metaphor. Anyway, building her on earth--while silly, imao--is not technically a canon violation since it was never said on screen where she was built. It is a lore violation since GR said over and over and over again that she was built (read: her major components assembled) in space.

On the other hand, this looks a lot more like the old Enterprise than Bale's Tumbler compares to West's Batmobile. As reinventions go, I still think they're going the Superman Returns route rather than that of Batman Begins or Casino Royale.

Probably due to less flexibility. Back in the 1960s, Bond was Connery, Batman was West, and Kirk was Shatner. By the early 1990s, Bond was Bronsan, Batman was Keaton, and Kirk... was still Shatner. Star Trek isn't used to this kind of change, so they'll be a tad more delicate.

Anyone who would honestly argue changing the font was somehow implausible, or in violation of canon, or overtly detrimental to the design (within reason) is a nit-picking for the sake of it and in need of a reality check. They can probably slap a new paint job on a starship in a matter of days! Simple hull lettering in hours! The font works here, no problem.

The font looks like Microgramma or Microgramma Extended.

Sweet!

I've been using that font on my fanfic ships for years...

Love the nacelle caps...

Isn't that the same font Franz Joseph used? How ironic.

I'm a bit worried about the reaction so far. We're mostly all drooling over this one small pic. If we see this thing launch from the yards some of us will need to be carried from the theater. Myself included.
I triple dog dare people here to, when they see the first sight of the new ship onscreen, scream "They got the nacelles wrong!" from their seats.
I expect some of that to happen.
In the theater I expect to hear:
-- at least one painful groan,
-- a loud rant followed by storming out of the theater,
-- someone breaking down in sobs,
-- a "Fuck you, Abrams," shouted out of nowhere,
-- a cry of, "They HAVE raped my childhood," and
-- Junior Mints thrown at the screen by someone.

While the rest of us enjoy the cinematic beauty of it all.

-- Oh, and someone's cell phone will go off. Always happens.
Mark my words, the clipboards will fly

FleetLord said:I can see it now, the Enterprise vs. Trek XI continuty argument as to why the NX enterprise (and Columbia) was built in a space dock and the movie Ent built on Earth. I'm sure ther are a ton of reason they can explain it.
Who said that every part of the NX-01 was built in space? All we know is that, like the 1701(r), we see the final touches being applied in space. I don't recall anyplace in that series that stated that the nacelles were built from scratch in orbit, or that the main bulk of the saucer may not have been built planetside and lifted into orbit. We only know, really, that when Archer and Trip were flying around the ship before launch day, when it was nearly completed, it was in space.

That's not really evidence of anything.
This was based more on seeing the skeleton of Columbia in spacedock in the 2nd season final episode 'The Expanse'. Again, perhaps new stonger antigrav technology or sometype of new tractor beam exists to lift the Conny to a spacedock to complete construction 80-90 years after 'Enterprise'. Or other ships just pull it up there like we have helicopters carry things today.
Or...this film has little or nothing to do with the continuity and tech progressions suggested in that orphaned series. C'mon lads, can you not see there is little or NO connection between this Trek and what we have seen other than Leonard Nimoy??

I am loving this new design so far. I welcome the re-imaginings!

Yesssss, Junior mints!!! 10 second rule applies.
Movie theater floors are specifically exempted from that rule. You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and... well, more scum. We must be beyond cautious.

Word has it the Cloverfield monster was spawned from such environs...
