Of course, we could just take the trailer to be metaphor for Trek (and for the movie's production), much the way we take those really cool but really inaccurate paperback covers from the 1970s, and get a good night's sleep.

Really, though, I see it this way: the Enterprise from the original Star Trek (1966-79; maybe 1982) was built in space. This Enterprise? Doesn't matter so much.
The teaser as a metaphor was my first thought. The whole idea that the major symbol of a franchise over 40 years old stands before you disassembled and "under construction" is a neat touch. A way of saying something old is new again.

-- Airplane-shaped warp engines could refer to the long cigar shape of a plane's fuselage.

-- Nothing in on-screen canon says how the Enterprise was built. However, common sense alone would dictate that a ship of such mass, size, and shape could not have been built entirely on land. It'd be about materials, loads, and such.

(Then again in "Tomorrow is Yesterday" we saw the Enterprise sluggish but stable in Earth's very upper atmosphere. In TVH we saw a bird of prey in controlled atmospheric flight and FLOATING in water. The starship Voyager landed on a planet. And the entire saucer section of Enterprise-D made a controlled crash-landing on a planet.

Re: Description of the teaser trailer...

there's no canonical evidence to say the entirety of the 1701 was constructed in space, I really think many people have some false and personal canon in their heads that they just run with as though it is gospel until someone points out they're wrong. Such as the people in this thread who say there's no evidence of starship construction in the canon happening on planets, when their clearly is:

He is not, as far as we know. You've presented no evidence or reasoning to indicate that he is. You're wrong, and therefore you're insulting the character of someone you've never met or spoken to on no basis whatever. How do you justify that?

What if only the dedication plaque itself was build in San Francisco ?

Um... excuse me, what did Orci "lie" about?

He said that there was no reason it would have been done at "Area 51."

Did you see any mention of "Area 51" in that description?

Any other "lies" you think you're pointing out?

Inquiring minds want to know!

The description of the teaser mentions a large industrialized city or ship yard. So, NOT Area 51. But, San Francisco, maybe?

Everything.
It appears to me that the AICN report has been proven correct.
The part about the Enterprise being built on Earth has been anyway.
Love how you start out with "everything" and work your way down to "being built on Earth".

And wasn't it the claim that it was built at Area 51 that was denied?

Isn't Area 51 supposedly on Earth?

It could still be build on Earth while NOT being build in Area 51. Like being Build in Area 50 a

Bob Orci knows the same stuff I know. I have no doubt that he's putting this at the SFNY... right where my "Google Earth" image showed it to be. With the big "saucer construction cradle" to the west and the "nacelle construction cradles" being where the two big naval construction drydocks are.

Orci knows this stuff very well... and Abrams knows it a lot better than most of you think he does. They all do. This is a team made up of fans, who are the same age (and have the same experiences) as me. Everything I've seen, everything I've heard... everything I KNOW... tells me that these guys are making the Trek film I've wanted to see since right after TWOK, just as Abrams says is his goal.

If this really is at the San Francisco Naval Yards (right were I showed it to be), well... that'll pretty much prove that this is gonna be the movie I want to see.

If it's shown being constructed on the Paramount backlot, on the other hand... that's not a bad thing either. The symbolism of that would be great, even if it would obviously be "non-canon" in that case.

I heard something about this being the "AMT" starship assembly facility outside Troy, Michigan, actually.

Hee. That crossed my mind, too. Pan back, and you see the "Hollywood" sign. It gets back to the idea of the teaser being used as a metaphor for reconstructing the franchise. So, why not?

Since I couldn't find the original layout...

... that is, the one in the book I was talking about from before TMP...

I went ahead and redrew it from memory. This is the general layout, at SFNY, that the various starship components were to have been constructed in. Each component would then have been lifted into orbit, where the whole thing would be assembled, integrated, finished, activated, and tested.

If it's there, it ought to be obvious.

Look for well-known, identifiable SF landmarks. You'll see the Bay Bridge in the background (not the Golden Gate). You'll see the SF skyline. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if you see Candlestick Park (or whatever "sponsor name" it has now... ) Oh, and this is right next to South San Francisco... whose claim to fame in the area is being "The City of Industry."

Hm. I really like that, sounds like an excellent teaser.

I'm betting good money that some people won't be pleased with the idea of the Enterprise being constructed on Earth, though.
Ahhh San Francisco was on the dedication plate wasn't it?

Yes, but that's been conveniently forgotten by some.

This is one of the best ideas I've heard yet.

When it was rumored a few weeks ago that the teaser would show the Enterprise under construction, I said it's probably only a metaphor for the film, which is also "under construction". But the Paramount backlot and Hollywood sign would underscore that idea nicely.
