I didn't know people liked Doctor Who a lot, I always thought it was just . It seems like it's just geared towards kids, it just doesn't interest me at all. All the DW advertisements come on when kids are watching, DW spin off shows are on CBBC, all interviews on Newsround etc

What I liked most Mesages from Earth/Severed Dreams trigolgy is events and development characters reach to peak. We savour the infrastructure of story which has been building since "The Gathering" and Season 1. In sci-fi there is mostly a reset button which enables us to return to status quo at the end of every episode. ( usually a tecnobabble solution is found or the crisis itself is resolved by a last minute attempt ) Not here. After Severed Dreams , the main story crossed "Point of No Return" And we feel after effects of it !

WHO is a kids show. i watched it as a kid years ago, and part of the reason i like it now (and the only reason i even gave the re-launch a chance), is nostalgia.

that said, WHO is really pretty good when taken on its own. part of that has to do with the fact that there really isn't any amazing scifi out there (such as B5 - and you thought this post had nothing to do with this thread); and part of it has to do with the fact that Tennant is just really really really good as a Doctor.

still, there is some classic WHO cheesiness that you just have to get over (e.g., the slaveen). but all in all, you can't really go wrong with a show that ends the season with (SPOILERS!) the sound of drums

You can't view Who in the same light as a more "serious" SF show. It's not trying to be realistic or even plausible in the strictest sense; it's just a really fun show about a genius who defeats monsters, aliens, and other bad guys.

I suppose you could think of it as a somewhat less character-dynamic-focused, time-traveling version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It's got a rather similar sense of humor.

And yes, it's designed to be accessible to kids. One of the best things about Doctor Who is that it's really one of the few shows that can be appreciated (on various levels) by all ages.

If you want a good look at what sort of thing it tries to do, watch next Friday's episode, "Blink". (This Friday's is also good, but it's the second half of a two-parter. Not the best first look.) "Blink", by contrast, is not only a modern SF classic already----it's about as standalone as you can possibly get, story-wise, not even featuring the main characters all that heavily.

I'm assuming you're in the US, here.

'Blink' isn't this season's 'Love & Monsters' is it? 'cause that one sucked.

Anyway, just finished 'Ceremonies of Light and Dark' - new uniforms, spiffy. G'Kar's duckin' out from bein' reborn - funny. The hostage situation - dull.

This is for you, od0_ital

Delenn: "This is Ambassador Delenn of the Minbari. Babylon 5 is under our protection. Withdraw... or be destroyed."

Capt. Drake: "Negative. We have authority here. Do not force us to engage your ship."

Delenn: "Why not? Only one human captain has ever survived battle with Minbari fleet. He is behind me. You are in front of me. If you value your lives, be somewhere else."
THe quote we were all referring to earlier.

Similar amount of Doctor screentime, massively different quality.

Delenn did look bad ass in that command chair.

First episode of today, for those who are wonderin', will be 'A Late Delivery from Avalon', Disc Four.

Love, love, love that one, especially for G'Kar and the guest character. It's also got a wonderful example of non-verbal acting that says volumes.

"A Late Delivery From Avalon" is one of those underrated episodes, as far as I'm concerned. That is due in major part to Michael York's fine performance in a role that evokes great pathos. Several times.

The episode also has some fascinating music that stands apart from the rest of the series.

I may have mentioned this before and if so I apologize. I've got a Director's Cut tape for 'Avalon' that is unusual in that it even has music in some of the shots. Even stranger is that the music in some places is *completely different* from what showed up on the episode.

Huh... I guess that's somewhat similar to some of the scripts we got in the books. Documents that in many cases turn out markedly different from what ended up on-screen.

Re: Niners Unite...around Babylon 5! - The Lost Threads

To make this thread even more off topic, after I finsihed Babylon 5, I watched The 4400 up to season 3, Battlestar Glactica up to season 2, and now I'm on Stargate SG-1.

These are my sci-fi watchings for the last few years:

1) Star Trek: TNG
2) Star Trek: DS9
3) Star Trek: VOY
4) Star Trek: ENT
5) Babylon 5
6) Crusade
7) The 4400 (Seasons 1-3)
8 Battlestar Galactica (Miniseries, Seasons 1-2)
9) Stargate SG-1 (I'm currently in the middle of season 4)

Shows on DVD that I'll be watching in the future:

1) The rest of Stargate SG-1
2) Stargate Atlantis
3) The 4400 (Season 4)
4) Battlestar Galactica (Season 3)
5) Star Trek: TOS (re-mastered)
6) Farscape
7) The Dead Zone
8 Heroes

If you have any additional shows you think I should watch, let me know

Re: Niners Unite...around Babylon 5! - The Lost Threads

^^ Exactly. The script books gives a lot of insight into the intricacies of making the show and my collection of other stuff really shows how much attention to detail people paid.

BTW, I'm not sure I mentioned it but Volume 12 of the Script Books is now on sale although they don't expect to ship until the 18th due to JMS finding some archive items from the Art Department dating back to 'The Gathering' so all of the pre-production they'd done had to be re-done. The debut discount is lasting until they ship also.

"So how did you find out about all this?"
"I'm a telepath. Work it out."
- Sheridan & Bester, 'Ship of Tears'

I'm really startin' to like Walter Koenig on this show.
