I don't include this as one of the "good" episodes from the third season (those are "Spectre of the Gun," "Day of the Dove," "The Tholian Web" and "The Enterprise Incident" and only those four) but I do get a kick out of it.

Hey, I liked it. There's a lot of good stuff in the episode (as others have pointed out). I would certainly watch this before a lot of other episodes.

One of the more entertaining season 3 episodes. Love the Garth/Kirk outburst after being foiled by the "Queen-to-queens" code. Kirk in bed with Marta and the final fight scene all classic Trek trademarks. I just might watch this one tonight

I can't call it great or even truly good but it--along with "The Gamesters of Triskelion"--walks that razor's edge of camp so skillfully I can't help but love it. It's as if Adam West's Batman had been allowed to take us to Arkham Asylum.

And let's not forget Yvonne Craig and how her breasts, belly and buttocks filled that dress... Oh, fuck it--it's good. Really good.

I love this episode. It's got a title from Euripides (IIRC, the only Star Trek episode ever to do that), it's got superb hamfests from Ihnan, Craig and Shatner, a brilliant death scene with Craig, allusions to chess and Solomon, a planet called 'Elba II'... and the only Orion makeup I ever liked, incidentally. It's camp, sure, but as fun as they get. Definately better on that field than the atrocious "The Way to Eden" or the meandering "Spock's Brain." I'd rate it as one of the third season's best episodes, behind more the obvious contenders like "The Enterprise Incident" and "The Tholian Web."

An additional plus is that it's unusually adherent to Trek continuity. Aside from the neural neutraliser, there's an Andorian, a Tellarite, an Orion, and a bit of discussion of the vaguely-alluded to Axanar incident from "Court Martial". TOS's continuity could be pretty fluid and spotty, but this is it on a damn good day.

Who knew Whom Gods Destroy would inspire such passion?

Not a very good episode, BTW. Too much like the 3rd and 4th year Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea episodes, and that's not a favorable comparison.

IMO, Steve Ihnat and Ricardo Montalban are the only two actors from TOS who managed to steal every scene they were in (and in Ihnat's case, steal the scene when Kirk plays Lord Garth!) and that's no mean feat! Consider the scene when Spock is seated next to Kirk and Nimoy is trying (without success) to underplay/undercut Ihnat's over-the-top bellowing with a long pause and condescending "whatever" tone. Nimoy fails miserably and that scene alone is ample evidence that Ihnat was unstoppable in that episode. It also demonstrates everything that was wrong with Spock's characterization is S3, but that's grist for another thread...

One of my favourites.

Ihnat is superb as a ridiculously over-the-top psycho Garth.

"Lord Garth!"

Also love "I may strangle you with my bare hands..." and the immediate change of mood.

And let's face it, a script on this show doesn't have to be airtight or even sensible to be enjoyed as an episode. Right up there with other Season 3 gems like "Spocks' Brain" and The Way to Eden."

Awesome.

Sometimes you can just enjoy an episode for what it is rather than for what it fails to be! I like this one pretty well.
