This is the first time the series was in direct competition with fall series though.
I like how SciFi spun the numbers.

"We're +2% better than Season 2.5's average!"

Anyhow, the numbers are actually close to Stargate's... so I have no idea if that means anything.

I've got no idea what 1.8 means, nor really care, but what does a really popular show get? (something like CSI or House)

^Nah, that's the household share. This season, CSI is getting household ratings in the 13-14 range. The craziest household rating would be from American Idol, which IIRC was averaging near 18-19 HH ratings.

Anyway, as long as BSG can hold these ratings throughout the season, then it's good enough for Sci-Fi.

Well, other than the Superbowl I guess.

Well, from the website, CSI got 18.2, followed by Desperate Housewives with at 15.8.
But I do remember seeing Friends getting post 20 numbers... but it's so long now, and I have no idea where to find old Friends numbers.

But yeah, there are more Spongebob fans than... well, SciFi fans? That's kind of scary.

Those kids are going to take over the world!

(not that i care, as long as BSG doesn't get prematurely cancelled).

Come to think of it, BSG really IS like Carnivale, in that it's the best thing ever, only no ones watching. Oh well.

...Well if you really like the show then you'd have to care because numbers determine whether or not the show continues.

You know, I think a lot of the problem too is the advent of technology that hurts a lot of shows. Tivo, Satilite recorders-a lot of people tape these shows so their vote doesn't get counted...or is it just the folks with Neilson boxes? My friends love BSG but rarely watch it first run. Their recorders are so full of crap that sometimes it takes a week to get to watching the show from watching all the other stuff.

The rating is right in line with last season's finale. It is a bit foolish to compare two season premiere's (S2 and S3). I made the same case for Lost.

Additionally, look at the time of year BSG started last year vs. this year. Like it or not, a significant portion of the people who would watch BSG were watching the Yankees/Tigers baseball game. The Yankees are probably the biggest draw in baseball. Even if it only got a 5.x rating, that was still viewers who would might be watching BSG.

Splitting Sci Fi Friday was a bad idea, starting the season in October against post-season baseball and the new season was a bad idea. Hopefully this quashes any kind of talk about BSG jumping to NBC.

Edited to add: total viewers from 2.5 is up, the 25-54 demo is up, the 18-49 demo is up. And it was the #1 cable series on Friday night. The rough 1.8 looks bad, but the numbers did tick up.

I don't know if you can buy those numbers as total viewers. Also, Sci-fi ran the premiere like 8 times over the weekend, you'd have to check those numbers as well. Assume some new people watched them because they decided to go out on a Friday night and had to catch it later. Also, th prevalence of DVRs has gone up a lot in just the last 6 months alone.

The 1.8 is in line with the last half of the 2nd thing. Things had gotten pretty dire by then. Lots of wheel spinning and too much of a focus on soapy stuff--during a time when the survival of humanity was supposedly at stake!! I predicted this during last season.

Clearly that's why RDM retooled the show for this season. It's a good move and I hope it pays off!

Well, I guess this will put those rumors of BSG moving to NBC Monday nights to bed, tuck it in nice and tight, then shoot it in the head for good measure. If the ratings don't improve fast we could be looking at BSG's last season. The show is just too expensive to continue with low ratings, especially with Bonnie Hammer at the helm.

Remember what happened to Farscape.
