Now i know the blue is the wrong shade, but thats the closest i could get. And as Red uniforms didnt exist when Kirk was at this rank, i put him in blue to show the difference it can make, so...

We meet a young Lt. Commander Kirk on the Faragut...

Take a close look at the rank braid.
Rank braid??? Where???

Oh, there it is hiding behind JTK's stomach!

Good work, CF. Maybe the blue should be a deeper shade, but still an interesting idea. Couldn't resist the joke though. As for whether or not blue could be worn by security in The Cage and WNMHGB eras, it seems that security didn't have a set color. The sergeant-at-arms on Pike's bridge wears blue while guarding the turbolift. Mr. Leslie is in the second pilot, seemingly as a security guard, and wearing blue. He is in the first scene on Delta Vega and later in the first showing of Mitchell in the brig. So you may have the right color after all, since there doesn't seem to be any consistency in security colors before the dreaded red shirt appeared on the scene.
Sorry to have to rain on your parade but Kirk was not in security. That's actually a very old story dating from Trek's dark ages ( the 1970s ) and even then it was different. The story went that Kirk started in the Security curriculum at the Academy but when he learned that very few starship captains came up from the Security division he changed his major to Navigation as that was the more usual source of Captains.

The whole story was used to explain why Kirk was so good at HTH Combat and Small Unit Tactics. Not that Kirk couldn't have served in Security at one point or another. Most Command Officers have served in many different departments as part of their training, but Kirk was probably still a Lieutenant when he did his time in Security. By the time he made Lieutenant Commander he was probably an XO somewhere.

But that's just a guess on my part.
I just thought it was pretty nifty to see him in blue, thats all i wanted to do, not delve into the history books.
I guess thats what i get for altering his rank braids.

Anyway, as weve got to this topic, lets start our own Trek Folk-lore shall we...

Ive put him in blue, hes a Lt. Cmndr on the USS Faragut and hes not in security (which i never intended anyway), so, what does he do, we have to have something, i didnt spend 20 minutes altering his rank braids for nothing ya know.

So, what will it be...

Head of ship Sciences, bit of a long shot, but hey.
Medical Staff
Botanics (like Sulu used to be)
Cheif Tactical officer.

Remember, no-one knows for certain of the colours, this is early on where mustard and blue and light mustard were the only colours, no red. And blue was never disclosed in the Pike era as to what the department was.

That's very true. How about a stint as ship's astronomer? It seems to me that this would be a good thing for a navigator to know as well. Another possibility is as temporary Science Officer while the ship was waiting for a new replacement SO to be sent out to her.

Do either of those strike your fancy?

Re: A TOS/TMP Uniforrm Crossover Stunt.

Ooooh, astronomer sounds like something Kirk would be doing as a Lt. Cmndr.

Good one.

Can see him going over star charts on the computer, scanning new ones in and delving into reproductions of ancient charts from earth, as hes into antiques, by Galileo and the like.

I like it.

Re: A TOS/TMP Uniforrm Crossover Stunt.

Kirk never struck me as a hard science kinda guy. He'd have to understand some astronomy to be classified as a command pilot just as he'd have to understand something about how the systems in his ship work.

I've always envisioned the young Kirk as having divided his time between engineering and helm/navigation as well as a stint in security. Security wouldn't likely teach him starship combat tactics, I'd think being a pilot would be more tangental to that. And he most certainly would had to have taken courses in command as well as combat and military history. A more current example of what Kirk might have experienced is Ensign Checkov who has gained experience in different departments. Another example was Lee Kelso who seemed to be a systems specialist as well as helmsman.

In contrast to the impulsive character Kirk is often stereotyped as he is actually a rather intelligent fellow with a diversity of knowledge and experience--he'd have to be to have the position he holds. Yet it's also clear I think that command was always his primary goal. His job is to see the big picture and to make decisions based on the advice and specific knowledge his officers bring to him.

Interesting pic above although it would have been neat if you could have found a picture of a younger Shatner to modidy.

Some screen caps from the old Twilight Zone series might be helpful in that regard, if you can find them.

the episode 'the project staigas affair' from 1964 of the man from uncle also stars a young shatner and a young nimoy.

^ There you go!

Somebody grab a shot of Mark Lenard from Here Come the Brides and we could see Spock informing Sarek of his decision to forego the Vulcan Science Academy in favor of Starfleet.

^^ Or modify the young Mark Lenard as a younger Sarek wooing (in the Vulcan way?) a young Jane Wyatt as Amanda Grayson.

Weird. On Earth giving someone the finger is considered offensive while on Vulcan it's a gesture of affection. No wonder there is some serious cultural friction.

It can also be seen as uniting the two cultures since it is both an emotional and a logical reflexive action.

I did try to find a younger shatner, but, using one which already had the uniform and a piece of a set with him, i saved my self, ohh, a week.

Anyhoo, onto one of my personal best ones yet...

A screencapture from The Motion picture...

Can become the refitted USS Constitution making its long awaited debut in the Pilot for Star Trek Phase II

Now, CF, why stop with just two ships?

Let's see you could also have...

Lexington orbiting Vulcan
Bon Homme Richard orbiting Rigel
Hood orbiting K-7
Republic lost in the Delta Triangle
etc etc
etc etc

Hell, a whole damn fleet of 'em....just like it was supposed to be!

Ha Haaa.

Changing the reg number is difficult enough...

Not to mention names and numbers.

Re: A TOS/TMP Uniforrm Crossover Stunt.

Okay, I've tweaked aridas' designs.

Option 1 for TMP and/or Phase II would be to essentially keep the TOS palettes but soften the shades and diversify them. Sciences blue is distinctly deeper than Medical blue and Security red is distinctly deeper than Support Services red.

Option 2 is to soften the palettes a little further and introduce new colours for Medical (green) and Security (Steel blue/grey). The trousers are now charcoal with a hint of blue.

What isn't shown are the appropriate unisex fatigue alternates for each department which I may do later.

Oh man! How great are those? I'd say very great!!!

OK, really like the green for medical so how about a third option...

From first pic: 1st and 3rd rows
From second pic: 2nd row

Basically I prefer green for life sciences over green for command alternate. And I like the idea of the darker red for security (can't see people lining up to wear the other color).

But again, WOW! Nicely done.
