Re: 2014 Emmy Nominations Announced

I'll be honest, I just don't get some of the categories. American Horror Story, Fargo, and True Detective are all limited series that change casts and storylines each year (even though AHS keeps some actors, particularly Jessica Lange, albeit as a different character each season). Yet AHS: Coven and Fargo are up for Best Miniseries, but True Detective is up for Best Drama Series? Is it just because the latter is on HBO? And the (shortened) fourth and final season of HBO's Treme is a miniseries? And a single episode of Sherlock is a TV-movie?

Please, someone, explain. Or should I just learn to stop worrying and love the Emmys?

They are allowed to choose which category they submit in, so HBO chose to submit True Detective in Drama, which has a bit more prestige than Miniseries, while FX submitted Fargo and AHS: Coven in Miniseries, which is less competitive.

You have to have a certain number of episodes to qualify as a regular series. Treme and Sherlock fall below that.

Regarding the drama series vs. miniseries thing, the rule is that if you have a stable creative team (and, in American Horror Story's case, a lot of recurring cast) you are by default considered a series, and if you want to be considered as a miniseries (arguing that the plots, characters, etc. are completely different each year) you have to argue for an exemption. American Horror Story does that; True Detective did not, as they want to go for gold (whereas AHS knows it would never even be nominated, let alone win, anything in the regular categories).

OUTSTANDING COMEDY

The Big Bang Theory

Breaking Bad will have actual competition this year going up against True Detective. Also congratulations to Lena Headey for her first Emmy nomination!
And as usual, no sci-fi show is nominated. Oh well, I guess I'm not missing anything by not seeing the Emmys as usual.

Re: 2014 Emmy Nominations Announced

As much as I came to dislike several of the characters, this past season of The Good Wife was utterly brilliant. The fact it didn't score nominations in the writing and drama categories demonstrates how worthless awards shows in general - and the Emmys in particular - are. I suppose at least they got the acting nominations right.
