Wow ... Matthew Sweet. Good memories associated with his songs ... very good memories.

Re: Mixtape Thread

One of the grandmasters of power pop, I still don't think he's fully gotten the credit he deserves.

Re: Mixtape Thread

No, he hasn't. But I love his collaboration with Susanna Hoffs. That's almost credit by 80s pop association.

On a tangent, I think "pop" music, generally speaking, gets a bad rep as it is. There's a quote from Eddie Van Halen (which I can't properly source at the moment), where he said: "If it sounds good, it is good." Which validates a lot of pop music (Spice Girls notwithstanding). Matthew Sweet certainly falls into that description.

Re: Mixtape Thread

Indeed. So too the Atlantics, the Buzzcocks, Cheap Trick (it took me a long time to fully realize why Cheap Trick were so highly regarded, but I have), the Exploding Hearts and so on... powerpop is one of those sub-genres (like dub reggae, like country) that I had to grow into and just, finally, let myself appreciate because dammit, it sounds good.

Re: Mixtape Thread

^ Looks interesting, is there an mp3 somewheres? I could use something a little different from the rather generic club / electro mixes I'm currently working out to.

Re: Mixtape Thread

FACT put up a series of articles and mixes about the 100 Best Albums of the Seventies. The articles, with links to the streamable mixes, are here. I'm listening to the top 20 bracket right now and it's all manner of boss.
