Re: Mixtape Thread

I don't do mix tapes or as we have now, playlists. I obsess over one song or one album or one artist and listen to it until it is pulp.

Re: Mixtape Thread

What a fun thread!

It's an art, that's for sure. Not only the time-constraint, but also the art of ordering the songs; you have to start with a bang, drop back to lull the listener in, build to a crescendo around the middle, repeat for the second half, and end with the perfect wrap up song.

Mix tapes and CDs are big between my mom, sister, and me. It is still a sort of unspoken ritual of reconnecting and re-bonding over the perfect collection of music (I only see them once or twice a year). We introduce each other to new music and rediscover old favorites together -- it's the best. When I listen to a playlist on shuffle I still get a thrill and make a note if a pair of songs transition perfectly, or when a song just has a "this goes at the very end" feel. I've made some epic collections in my time! I can work pretty much every genre all into one mix and have a perfect flow -- I totally pride myself on my mix tape skillz and I'm not even going to pretend I don't.

I used to have a bunch saved as glorious playlists, but like everything else, iTunes 11 fucked them all up. One of the reasons I'm clinging to my old laptop is to get the battery fixed and get my old playlists off it. Now I'm even more inspired to do so!

Right now, the only one I still have in the correct order was a mix I made for my mom last summer entitled Six Great Grunge Bands That Aren't Nirvana (nothing against Nirvana, but I'd just made her a Nirvana-heavy mix not long before):

The Green Manalishi - The Melvins
Pump It Up - Mudhoney
Stargazer - Mother Love Bone
Dollar Bill - Screaming Trees
Half - Soundgarden
Corduroy - Pearl Jam
Yellow Ledbetter - Pearl Jam
The Day I Tried To Live - Soundgarden
Like Being Stoned - Screaming Trees
Smile - Pearl Jam
Elijah - Mother Love Bone
Nearly Lost You - Screaming Trees
June Bug - The Melvins
Betterman - Pearl Jam
Aye Davanita - Pearl Jam
Working Class Hero - Screaming Trees
Gentle Groove - Mother Love Bone
The Bloat - The Melvins
Good Enough - Mudhoney

About the only suggestion I have is to consider Temple of the Dog - but considering it's a mashup of bands already on the list, it might be a bit redundant.

I have a Mixtape (well, it's a CD) that I keep in the car. It's called "Life is Short and You're Going To Die." (That's what I wrote on the CD, in sharpie).

1. Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying - Gerry & The Pacemakers
2. Year of the Cat - Al Stewart
3. Mad World - Tears For Fears
4. Ain't No Sunshine - Bill Withers
5. Clocks - Coldplay
6. The Sound of Silence - Simon & Garfunkel
7. Lilac Wine - The Cinematic Orchestra
8. Hurt - Johnny Cash
9. Tears in Heaven - Eric Clapton
10. Pink Moon - Nick Drake
HAHAHAHAHHA. I find this hilariously depressing. Especially considering one of my most abused playlists, entitled "Fucking Gloomy", which features among others, the following:

Country Feedback (live) - R.E.M.
Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want - The Smiths
Tom Waits - Hold On
Lost in the Supermarket - The Clash
Hell Bent - Kenna
Needle in the Hay - Elliott Smith
Catch Me - Bandits
Leave - R.E.M.
Fly - Nick Drake
If - Pink Floyd
Leave - Glen Hansard
Closer to the Start - Duke Special
You Look So Fine - Garbage
Before You Were Born - Toad the Wet Sprocket
Louisiana - Underworld
All Apologies - Nirvana Unplugged
All Apologies - Sinead O'Connor (because once isn't enough)
Two - The Antlers
Wicked Little Town (Reprise) - Hedwig and the Angry Inch OCR
Sadness Is A Blessing - Lykke Li
The Funeral - Band of Horses
Fade Into You - Mazzy Star
Life In Rain - Remy Zero
Samskeyti - Sigur Ros
Acrobat - Maximo Park

You don't know how much I dream of an alternate reality where they put out more than one album. Damn...just any opportunity for Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder to sing together more often, their voices are amazing together.

Keep 'em coming, everyone!

I suppose I should break that playlist down at some point into actual Mixtape-sized chunks, since it does have sections anyway.

BigJake, I would probably kill myself after listening to your mixtape. That is HORRIBLE.
Hey, BigJake - It sounds like you need to add this to the end of the list, then:

I love it.

I use to do them all the time. Still have some. I use to see a lot of unsigned bands, so I'd do ones just of them. Then do the other bands.
I never got into the CD version though, took me too much time.

There's a reason why Hunger Strike (as well as the rest of the album) is so damn intoxicating to listen to. Very raw, powerful ... they captured something with that album. Once in a lifetime, maybe, but damn was it special. Mad Season was good, but nearly so.

At any rate, here's a mixtape titled "Redemption Songs":

"Redemption Song" - Bob Marley Legend
"All I Want Is Everything" - Def Leppard
"Where Are You" - Cat Stevens
"Turn! Turn! Turn! (To Everything There Is A Season)" - The Byrds
"Everlong (Acoustic)" - Foo Fighters
"Chain Lightning" - Don McLean
"If You Could Read My Mind" - Gordon Lightfoot
"Lighthouse" - James Taylor
"Free" - Train
"Santa Fe" - Jon Bon Jovi
"Hello Again" - Neil Diamond
"Wildflowers" - Tom Petty
"City Of Blinding Lights" - U2
"Bird On A Wire" - Leonard Cohen
"Naked Rain" - This Picture
"Heroes" - Wallflowers
"Rainbow Connection" - The Muppets
"Even Now" - Barry Manilow
"If I Could Change the World" - Eric Clapton
"Volare" - Gipsy Kings
"Two Step" - Dave Matthews Band

They are often mooting the notion of doing another album, I think it will happen eventually.

That is a wonderful list btw.

You know, I bought Last Words, the Screaming Trees swansong album of outtakes from the unrecorded final album off eBay from Van Conner's webshop, and he signed it for me

Re: Mixtape Thread

My "mixed" tapes were all songs I taped from the radio, not a mix of other cassettes and LPs I already had. I've divided songs into genres on my iPod but don't have actual playlists. The music I listen to is so diverse and what I listen to depends so much on my mood and what I'm doing that I just play specific albums or specific artists (right now it's Nancy Ajram). Having said that, I'm deeply in love with Ancient Mariner's playlist.

Thanks for the compliments on the list! I'm not sure if anyone really wants to give it a listen, but if so, I went ahead and did one of those youtube playlist thingies.

Re: Mixtape Thread

There was a mixtape thread over in TV & Media last year, Favorite Mixtape/CD.... Here is my entry from that (less a few videos that have since been taken down; note that it was track-limited to 15 tracks):
Without a track-limit, it needs at least a few more:
