Re: Speculations on Star Trek 3?

As a Trek fan, I wouldn't have a problem with the Cardassians at all, but the whole philosophy behind these new movies is to make them appeal to as wider audience as possible and rejuvenate the franchise, so I'd be very surprised if the Klingons don't feature heavily in the next instalment. I'd wager that there's literally millions of people on this planet who have never seen a second of Trek in any iteration that know who the Klingons are.

I'm not saying I'm desperate for a Klingon story (though a nice juicy fleet battle with a few D7 battlecruisers appeals) but, like they used Khan (and I would say the Klingons are far more famous worldwide) in STID, I think Bad Robot would be foolish to not use our ridge-headed friends in a major capacity in ST3, it's just a question of what the story will entail and wether they can write some decent Klingon characters for it.

One thing we know for sure, Alice Eve won't be seen in her underwear again
That's a good thing. If it doesn't serve the plot, it doesn't belong - and it definitely didn't serve the plot.
For me, that scene was a well acted, brief, humorous aside that made me chuckle.

It worked tremendously well on that level, and certainly got a laugh from theatre goers when I saw it (several times) - both male and female. Whether it serves the plot or not is immaterial, it played perfectly in the overall flow of the film and achieved its goal.

Some great chemistry between Pine and Eve going on there too IMHO.

This^ and Smellmet's post before it

+1

I still just don't get the whole bitching about Alice Eve in her space undies. I mean...it's been goong on since 1966 ...panty flashing in the TOS uniforms...hell, even Joanne Linville gave a nice panty peek in her Romulan uniform. And then there was the sideboob outfits on other guest female characters...the tin-foil bikini on the Treskellion female thrall....jeez.

I am a man who appreciated the hot feminine form. Last time I checked, that wasn't a crime.

I never had a problem with it either, it was a mildly amusing scene that played to Kirks womanising side and sowed the seed for a possible future romance. Yes it didn't advance the plot, but neither does 'starship porn' it's popcorn entertainment.

Personally I'd like to see the Enterprise crew tangle with Cardassians.

The 2009 Trek movie already established firmly that Starfleet has had some contact with Cardassia in the 23rd century (or at least they have in this universe), certainly some degree of trade has taken place, and it just might be cool to see what 23rd century Cardies were really like.

The Cardassians would provide something old and something new both at the same time.
As long as they're not Kardashians, I'd be fine with it.

I think the scene would have worked better as the quick throw-away scene you describe, but the excessive use of the image in publicity prevented it from being perceived that way by many fans.

Iron Man Three made a lot of money last year, was a unqualified failure as a Trek movie.

How is it a failure if it wasn't trying to be a Trek movie?

Question, was Star Ttrek Darkness even trying to be a Star Trek movie?

No, it wasn't. The budget was too big, the FX too state of the art, and the production values were too high. And dare I say, a lot of the acting was too good. The story was also fast-paced and exciting, which at least isn't always Trek.

I think the same question could be fairly asked of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and Star Trek: First Contact.

Let's see ...

Captain Kirk? check.
Mister Spock? check.
A ship called Enterprise? check.

Yup, it was trying to be a Star Trek movie.

It wasn't trying to be faithful to Roddenberry's vision (or Berman and Braga's), if that's what you're asking.

Let's see ...

A character named Captain Kirk who is significantly different than the character previously seen, Check.

A character named Spock who make little attempt to control his emotions and who is openly engaging in a sexual affair with a junior officer. Check.

A ship called Enterprise. Check.
