I remember the rumors after season 1 of a Roanoke colony season. I still think that would be pretty awesome.

Entertainment Weekly has some more info

Set in Jupiter, Florida, in 1950, Freak Show finds Jessica Lange playing a German ex-pat who is managing one of the last freak shows in the U.S. Her group of “unusuals”? Kathy Bates, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Angela Bassett, and Frances Conroy all play performers whom Lange’s character has rescued; Denis O’Hare and Emma Roberts are also in talks to return. Freak Show’s 13 episodes will track this group as they do anything to keep their business around.

That much was already known.

Slightly off topic but I'm currently rewatching Season 1, 8/12 episodes in.
I find it weird how they cast Eric Close to play Constance's former husband, and yet he's only in 2 episodes, and in those he's in each ep for about 10 seconds.
I know he's a not super duper huge star, but he's a well established actor, the lead in at least two old favourite shows of mine I used to love (albeit both one season wonders.)
It's odd why they didn't do more with him.

The story surrounds a young farm boy who joins the carnival in search of meaning to his life and their ultimate battle against the forces of evil led by a supposed holy man posessed by demons, who controls his followers through his sermons heard on national radio... Oh wait... Dang...
