Yep. Here's the appropriate screencap at Trek Core:

Re: Which episode is this image from?

Is it the lighting or does that phaser look incomplete?

Nope, It's a Black & White. They were that way in the first few episodes filmed. They
did not stand out well on film so they gave them to Wah Chang to re-work. Those are the phaser's we know and love.

What's particularly neat about this scene is that it's one of the very few (if not the only one, though I won't swear to that) when the type-1 phaser targeting scope is raised while it's attached to the type-2 phaser.

I can envision a small targeting screen (like a digital camera) allowing for more pinpoint accuracy when firing.

I am fairly certain that the spelling is an inadvertent typo, but I wanted to point out that it should be Dr. 'Crater' (Dr. Robert Crater), although I had a brief image of Kirk stunning Dr. Samantha Carter.... and wondering if Dr. Crater had unearthed(?) a Stargate during his dig on M-113!

Those black phasers don't look bad, actually.

I'm in awe at the thought that went into the phaser design : pop up aiming sight, integration of Phaser 1 into Phaser 2 as a power pack, torch light on the end to highlight when the beam effect should appear. Just brilliant, Matt Jefferies.
