Encounter At Farpoint/Arsenal of Freedom Soundtrack

My copy of this new release arrived yesterday. Another fine entry in this renaissance of Trek music releases. Listening to track 4. Stalled / Picard's Plan / First Chase (4:48) which is the equivalent of track Picard’s Plan* / First Chase* / First Chase (part 2)* 2:41 from the 1988 release. In the new 2014 remix at :35 seconds into track 4 we hear the classic Courage fanfare (when Picard announces, "From this point, no station aboard, repeat no station, for any reason will make use of transmitted signals or intercom. We'll try and take them by surprise. Let's see what this galaxy class starship can do.") which sounds distinctly less pronouned than in the original release/mix. Anyone else discern that or know why the slight modification? Doesn't detract from the enjoyment of the album, just something I discerned after listening to the original release over 25 years.

I am eagerly awaiting my own copy of the new soundtrack. I can't answer your question, so I'll ask one of my own - is the actual TNG season one theme song included on this release? On the original Farpoint release, they mixed the "Space, the final frontier" section of the theme with the end credit music from Farpoint. To my knowledge, the actual, screen-used season one theme has never been released...

Alas, no it still is not the season 1 version proper with the pulsing drums, which is the most bombastic version heard in the series IMO. I was hoping that we would have it with this release. Will have to remain content with a audio rip from the blu ray for now.

Thanks for the info. I'm still excited to get my hands on this release, but I'm very disappointed that they haven't corrected this error. I don't understand why that version of the theme has never been released. I had hoped it would be on the four-disc set that came out a couple of years ago, then was hoping again to find it on this release.

Oh well...maybe on the next one?

It's a great shame the actual version of the theme music for season 1 isn't on this CD, what was on the original EaF release is included again.

Having listened to the section of Picard's Plan you pointed out there is a definite difference, the original synth Courage fanfare has been supplemented with real horns and it does sound slightly softer than the original.

Re: Encounter At Farpoint/Arsenal of Freedom Soundtrack

Got mine last week. Fantastic stuff!

The only minor complaint I have is how some of the individual segments blend together a little too readily, though most examples aren't that bad. The one that stands out the most however, is the music where the USS Hood departs orbit of Deneb IV (listed on this CD as "Orbiting"- track 10). It is simply one of two pieces I've been craving most since 1988 (the other being "Hovering"- track 8). Here, "Orbiting" blends rather heavily into "Personal Log" which I'm certain was a stand alone piece on the original soundtrack. "Hovering" does a much better job blending with "On Manually," as they actually let it completely play out, coming to an end right before starting up the next segment. Now granted, some of these are just short, thematic, filler pieces, often associated with the "return-from-commercial-break" mentality, but I would have preferred they were presented exactly how we hear them in the episode.

It's very funny having listened to the original soundtrack so many times over the years... Just hearing "U.S.S. Hood" makes my mind leap immediately into "On Manual" but now "Magic Apples" takes stage and derails my brain.

"Personally, I'm delighted. Any chance to go aboard the Enterprise..."

I can't speak to whether or not the season one theme included is the one you guys want or not, but I'm thrilled we have gotten another full album of Star Trek music.

Beggars can't be choosers and yet we've gone from paupers to princes these last few years. I'm grateful for all the hard work the people at LaLaLand, Varese, Intrada, and GNP Crescendo have been doing to bring us these wonderful releases.
