I like, despite the weird pose. It has hints of both 1 and 3 there, I think. The little splash of color in the lining is a nice touch.

Since the ring is upon his left hand, "ring" finger position, it might just be his wedding band. (Is he married?) Hartnell wore a garishly large dark stone upon his right hand, middle (or "bird") finger.

Sincerely,

Bill

I think that's the underside of a couple of cufflinks. Why he'd have two cufflinks on one cuff is unclear to me, but then, I don't have a good understanding of cufflinks.

I'm not sure about those shoes -- they're not good for running in.

Well that's fine. It wouldn't exactly be a bad thing in my mind if there was a lot less frantic running around in the new series...

I kinda wonder now if Moffat or Capaldi already had in mind the basic tie-less look when they shot the end of TOTD. The two costumes really do flow well into each other.

First impressions, I like it, though it's maybe a tad too simple, though that's better than a tad too whacky any day of the week. The important thing is that he looks comfortable in it, and it does suit him. Definitely feels quite Pertwee'ish, though whilst the pose is pure 3rd Doctor, there's a hint of Four in there too.

AWESOME!!!!

Do you want to know the best thing? I guessed that Capaldi would have top button swag, and I was bang on!!!!!
I don't know, I was reading through the other thread to see if anyone was close and I just read your prediction and it seems mostly off?

I'd like him to sport a long dark coat that looks like something from the 18th and 19th centuries or even medieval. Maybe a waistcoat along the lines of the eighth doctors, maybe even a cravat and pocket watch too. But I'd probably have it in a dark red or black, possibly even ark blue instead of the light gold look though.
Mr Awe
That was just what I thought he should and what I wanted him to look like. I'm sure somewhere whether it was here or another forum I said I think he may be the first doctor with top button swag. I definitely had that idea in my mind anyway.

Does he have a cravat? It's hard to tell with the contrast.
I'm pretty sure it's just a shirt with the top button done up. As Capaldi or the designer said, "no frills".
Yeah, I think you're probably right. The shirt looks a little rumpled there, plus the shadow made me wonder, but the larger picture makes it easier to see.

Re: The 12th Doctor's Wardrobe Revealed!

I'm wondering if that's just his normal wedding band on his left hand. It would be too much of a plot point to leave it on. I did a quick search for pics of his left hand when not in character, and he is usually wearing a ring (Malcolm Tucker and some of his other characters were definitely not). It looks to be a fairly ornate ring as well (i.e. not just a simple gold ring), so it's probably hidden in the picture they decided to release simply because he forgot to take it off for this promo shoot.

And if it's in fact part of the character and DOESN'T mean River, then we now have a reason for River to be pissed the next time we see her.

I don't know....

I don't really see Pertwee. I get more of a Colin Baker vibe...

And of course, bow ties are still cool.

I don't know. Parts of it I like, but I'm not a fan of the red lining; it's a little too Austin Powers for me.

I don't in general like the Doctor's outfits to get too eccentric. To me, the gold standard for Doctor costumes is still the Ninth Doctor's.

Re: The 12th Doctor's Wardrobe Revealed!

Uninspired, but OK. Won't really subtract or add to the show.

Conceptually, it's a piece-for-piece modern translation of a 19th century gentleman's outfit; costume-by-numbers:

- For proper laced boots, substitute cheaper (and cheap-looking) DMs. Even Matt Smith's boots looked nicer, and they weren't exactly great either.
- For a frock coat, substitute a sized-down Crombie.
- For a waistcoat, substitute a cardigan (maybe sleeveless, given the french cuff shirt, but impossible to really be sure)
- Keep a white shirt, but lose the cravat. French cuffs instead of lace frills.
- Trousers are pretty much like-for-like, though these are probably a bit more rustic in material perhaps.
- The choice of dark navy is straight out of Brummel.

Also, the styling details fall awkwardly between the scruffy Doctors and the smart ones. If that was deliberate intent, I think the lack of clearer direction is a mistake.

The sweep of the coat and overall Pertwee-esque pose suggests that they were going for a feel more in keeping with the elegant ones, but the details let that down. For example, the boots look actively cheap, as does the cardigan, and the trousers don't fit terribly well.

The same overall effect, but much greater style, could have been achieved by using a nicer pair of black laced boots (eg Trickers Stow) & cleaner-fitting (but still slim/tapered) flannel wool trousers instead of what looks like moleskin/brushed cotton. I'll assume the shirt fits acceptably well in a normal pose, though my gut says it probably doesn't. Its style is fine, verging on good. The cardy is OK too, but I don't like the shiny buttons (though it's not clear if they're smoked grey mother of pearl or plastic that's caught the flash; either way, horn would be much nicer. IIRC Sunspel do an almost identical v-neck cardy with better buttons). The overcoat is probably the nicest element of this modern interpretation, and it's nice a fairly traditional brand like Crombie get a high-profile shout-out.

I also think he'd look better in a suit rather than mismatched coat & trousers, but given the use of an overcoat as the top half, that would mean far too thick trousers if they did use the same material for the trousers, so OK, fair enough.

It's not a bad costume at all, though. Just a bit mediocre.
