Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

I don't like how, instead of a circle type design at the front of each of the four wing segments, we get a big circle on each wing. It does look like the Headhunter, a bit too much for me. It looks more like an intermediate design between the headhunter and x-wing now. It also looks kind of weird in that shot without an astromech droid, but the slot for a droid is probably just empty as opposed to missing. Its not a bad design, I just don't think its really an improvement over the old design.

Heh, looks like my quick and dirty 3D model I made a couple months ago wasn't a million miles off the mark....

The blue stripe may be a callback to the X-wings originally being blue, but then ditched for red because it would've messed up the FX.

Also makes me wonder if we'll finally see the B-wings in action at all. They're in a few flybys in ROTJ but dissiapear from the battle altogether because they were too thin to film or something like that.

Ooo, that X-wing is sexy. The engine configuration looks almost exactly like the McQuarrie concept art.

Yeah, to all.

I freakin love the new X-Wing. And especially the closeup of the weathered, peeling paint job on it. The blue stripe might take a little getting used to, but I can understand how they would want to differentiate it a little from the original.

I do notice that the wings seem a helluva lot thinner than the originals though.

Either way, I can't wait for the model kit of this.

Are you kidding? I'm sure by now someone has 3d rendered it and printed it on a 3d printer by now. All based on that video.

Oh interesting. From what I've read, the wings apparently open a bit differently this time. Instead of one half being on top of the other, they're side by side now. So one side moves up and the other moves down. Which would explain why the wing appears so thin from the front.

They're staggered? That would look pretty neat, I think. No matter how you slice it, the design is still straight out of the classsic McQuarrie school, which is fine by me, and an improvement over the shiny deco prequel stuff like the Naboo fighter.

Actually the Naboo fighter is the one prequel-era ship design I actually really liked. It had a really cool, sleek design, so I was bummed it wasn't used as the main fighter ship throughout the movies like the X-Wing of the OT.

They were certainly cooler than those awful Jedi Starfighters or that weird three-winged fighter, at least.

Yeah, I really liked the Naboo fighter-- it looks like a ship "from a more civilized age," one not really intended to see combat. And the Delta-7 is all right. It's the Eta-2 I hate. How on Earth did someone decide that 1) the Delta-7 was the ancestor of the TIE fighter and 2) there was an intermediate stage between the two? The Eta-2 doesn't look like a ship anyone would ever design except if they knew the TIE was in the future.

Well I never liked the idea period of seeing so much of the Empire's designs originate on the side of the good guys (whether it was TIE Fighters, Stormtroopers, or Star Destroyers). Lucas might have come up with a decent explanation for it, but it still always looked really strange and bizarre to me. Not to mention overly-obvious.

I like the new X-Wing design. It only makes sense that 30+ years after the OT the Rebel Alliance would develop a superior followup to their frontline fighters during the Galactic Civil War. In the real world most nations upgrade their frontline combat aircraft at least once during a 30-year period so it's cool to see that the Alliance shopped around for a new design to keep themselves as well-armed and equipped as possible in the face of post-Vader and Emperor threats.

The Naboo fighter always looked like it came from Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea to me. Like the submarine from that show had escort fighters.

The idea that the Republic slowly *became* the Empire has been out there since day one. Hell, I'm pretty sure it's spelled out in the original film's novelization. Why wouldn't there be commonalities in what equipment the Empire and Old Republic used?

As for the Naboo fighter, while whether one likes the aesthetic or not is a matter of personal taste, the whole point was to show that there was a cultural shift under way and that makes it totally valid IMO. Showing the move away from the elegant designs unique to individual systems and towards the harsh, utilitarian, homogenised and uniform design aesthetic was very much intentional. It ties back to Kenobi's sentiment about "a more civilized age."

As for this new X-wing like ship; I like it. Clearly inspired by the early McQuarrie concepts. Can't wait to see them in action.
Regarding the comparisons to the Z-95 Headhunter: well...no duh? That ship design was also derived from the same concept art, so the similarities should hardly be surprising. Besides, the closest thing to a canon design of the Z-95 is the one that appeared in TCW, not the EU materials and that looks much more like the early, slender looking study models with the green markings that McQuarrie's artwork.

Perhaps, but the way they did it just felt way too clumsy and obvious to me. Not to mention that watching the OT as a kid, I never would have expected or wanted to see the Jedi flying around in proto-Star Destroyers or bizarre TIE Fighter-inspired ships. It just didn't look like a natural fit at all, and didn't feel true to what they were.

Yeah I actually don't mind the sleeker, shinier aesthetic of the prequels overall. That bit of reasoning I actually thought made sense. My problem was just that (except for the Naboo ships) I didn't think many of the prequel designs were all that good.

Since we know what the Imperial fighters will look like ahead of time, I see the resemblance of Jedi starfighters to TIE fighters as symbolic to us in the audience of the Jedi being undermined, corrupted, and made to look like the bad guys. Despite how unsubtle it is, I think it's a nice touch of irony.
