American Horror Story (Season 4): Freak Show

Link

Starring Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Frances Conroy, Denis O'Hare, Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Michael Chiklis

From Wikipedia:

The fourth season will be set in Jupiter, Florida in 1952. It will be centered around one of the few remaining freak shows at the time, as its members do anything to keep the business alive. The season will focus on the conflict between the freaks and the "evil forces" who do not understand them. The season will also feature a "clown killer" and a "bearded lady."
Looking forward to tonight's premiere!

Very much looking forward to this.

One of my very favorite shows.

Well that was certainly something, what I dont know, but something.

Liked the killer clown, the scene where they all pledge to be monsters, the shows opening, and the guy who wanted to see the freaks.

Disliked Lange and her horrid attempt at an accent, she just felt flat in the role and her singing was enough to make me hit mute on the remote.

Not enough life in the sideshow itself, Carnivale felt more lived in and real in the first five minutes than this show in its entire length.

I wanted to be excited for this, but everything felt so bland. There was no allure like the previous seasons, and there doesn't seem to be much direction.

There were a lot of interesting visuals, but it felt like a bunch of events haphazardly strung together.

Re: American Horror Story (Season 4): Freak Show

I tend to agree with the reviews. The season opener wasn't very strong in terms of story and pacing.

So far, Dot and Bette look like interesting characters who are being hunted down by police for their mother's murder. Sarah Paulson gave a good performance, same with Evan Peters as Mr. Dildohands. The killer clown is certainly creepy. There's nothing special about Elsa Mars that makes her stand out. That little musical number toward the end sounded more like a 1970s Elton John tune than 1950s music.

The opening theme has a more whimsical tune to it and gives it a more carnival theme.

I felt that this episode was flat, lets hope the season begins to pick it up next week.

That was David Bowie's Life on Mars.

^ Thanks. Did anyone else notice how Botoxy Jessica Lange's face looked in that performance?

I liked it (seems I'm in the minority here). Clownie seems like he's got some issues, sure, but..what a lovely home!

The woman from Extant...that whole thing was bizarre...she's a sex slave for the cast? Nice.

The two-headedness was handled pretty well. It looked better than I thought it would.

I thought Jessica Lange was going to go full Madeline Kahn from Blazing Saddles there for a minute...

I enjoyed it, and look forward to seeing where they take us

Apparently that's Meryl Streep's daughter.

That's Grace Gummer, who has been in Frances Ha, The Newsroom, and some other recognizable stuff. She was in an episode last season, though I don't remember who she played exactly.

The opening was okay. Nothing sure did happen for an extended episode. Jessica Lange seems to just be phoning it in at this point.

I'm looking forward to seeing this. The whole carnival, sideshow, freakshow milieu is a classic trope, but rarely used these days. Carnivale didn't last very long and there hasn't been much else. All I can think of is an episode of Sleepy Hollow that really was just enough to whet the appetite.
