Went to see the new X-Men film on openin' day last week.

Freakin' awesome movie that brings together the two casts for the franchise in a great way, and manages to reboot the present day characters in all the right ways. Gonna have to go see that again a couple more times.

Got to see MDA this past Tuesday night. I liked it quite a bit. Not great, or anything, but it was an enjoyable "based on a true story" sports film about an agent who goes to India to find and exploit a new market for major league baseball.

Rented three DVDs from Hasting's the other night.

Grudge Match was the most entertainin' of the three. The Monuments Men was pretty good, too.

And finally, went to the Carmike 6 in Nacogdoches today to see the latest Disney movie. And it was not good, at all. Flat actin', no humor, way too much CGI...so many things wrong with this movie.

On the plus side, I did get to see the teaser for Big Hero 6. Awesome.

16. Wreck-it Ralph
An interesting take on the inner lives of video game characters. 8.5/10

17. Tangled
Almost as good as Frozen. Rapunzel is well characterized. 8.9/10.

18. The Princess and the Frog
An interesting movie... 8/10.

19. Bolt
An interesting movie (in a different way to the above). The three main characters play well off each other.

14) Love & Other Drugs - D

So Anne Hathaway can fake orgasm with the best porn stars in the business, but there's nothing redeeming to this movie at all.

Is it a love story about two broken people? Is it trying to say something about how pharmaceuticals ruin people's lives? Who knows, but either way, it's a tired old concept and execution, right down to him chasing her on a bus, having his five minutes spiel and suddenly everything is alright. There's nothing new here and neither the story or the actors are able to escalate this pedestrian piece.
I gave that move a good grade when I saw it. I thought it was everything that No Strings Attached and Friends With Benefits should have been.

Followed that with NS, which has him as an air marshal embroiled in a terrorist plot on a transatlantic flight. Nice suspense, some good red herrings, and one little bit at the end that made me wonder if they were settin' up a sequel.
I thought the same thing. They're making Taken 3, so who knows.

53. Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (✩✩✩½) - Download - Not a bad outing. I liked Kevin Costner and Keira Knightley, and Chris Pine makes for a pretty good action hero.

54. Godzilla (✩✩✩✩) - Theatre - My review is here. Unlike the 1998 film, this one is a nice mix of old style Godzilla movies and modern production values.

55. X-Men: Days of Future Past (✩✩✩✩) - Theatre - My review is here. It was nice to see the old generation and the new one in the same movie.

56. Non-Stop (✩✩½) - Download - Pretty much what od0 said in the quote above.

57. Parts Per Billion (✩✩½) - Download - We see the lives of different couples, young and old, against the backdrop of a plague that's wiping out mankind. Notable stars include Frank Langella, Teresa Palmer, Rosario Dawson and Josh Hartnett. It sounds good but it's too talky and unfocussed with the narrative jumping all over time, and it has worse production values than a YouTube fan film.

Magic Magic (2013) ★★

Michael Cera and Juno Temple hang out in the woods and try to hurt each other physically while Juno slowly starts to lose her mind and then there's a 30 minute cliff jumping scene. Yup... there's really not much too this movie. It's not good enough to recommend, but it's not awful enough to spend a lot of time hating on it.

28. The Killer Inside Me: A-
29. Rio 2: B
30. Welcome to the Rileys: B+
31. X-Men: Days of Future Past: A-
32. Atonement: B

After XMOFP I decided to see what on James McAvoy's filmography I might've overlooked and this presented itself.

SPOILER ALERT: It does not end well, no happy ending here

Taking place in England during/about WWII this film is about a girl, Briony, who makes an accusation against Robbie Turner(McAvoy) on her sister, Cecilia(Keira Knightly). She actually witnesses a rape but the victim will not corroborate. She then blames Robbie, thinking him a sex fiend for the act she did see with her sister. Robbie is sent to prison but when war breaks out he's offered a chance to serve or die in prison.

Long story short, Briony grows up into her teens and wants to make amends but can't. In adulthood she becomes an author and her last book is called Atonement. Here we find out she could never get actual atonement cause Cecilia and Robbie both die in separate places under different situations. The book is about giving them a happy ending and by extension admitting she was wrong for fingering him for rape all those years ago. Briony is also developing dementia so this is her last book and last chance to clear her conscious.

A well acted film if very melancholy throughout. I thought it a bit long even though it's only 2hrs. Might be cause despite the acting the tone of the film was just a downer.

Re: Movies Seen In 2014

^

I liked the downer endin' the movie had when I watched it a few years back.

The Family - Netflix Instant
Romancing the Stone - Netflix Instant
The Jewel of the Nile - Netflix Instant
The Sklar Brothers: What Are We Talking About? - Netflix Instant

Watched a few movies on Netflix over the weekend.

The Family wasn't that good. Kind of an aimless story about a family headed by Robert de Niro & Michelle Pfieffer in witness protection and bein' guarded by Tommy Lee Jones. Not sure what the point of the film was, aside from showin' how screwed up the all are.

RtS and TJofN were watched back to back. The first was the better of the two. The sequel was all around dumb.

The Sklar Brothers comedy special was pretty funny, though it seemed like an oddly small venue to film a special at, and the ESPN sports commentary thing was pretty stupid.

I also managed to watch the seventh season of Dexter over the weekend and watched the third series of Sherlock today.

And I may go see A Million Ways to Die in the West tomorrow...

The Sklar Brothers: What Are We Talking About? - Netflix Instant
Robocop (2014) - DVD
Lone Survivor - DVD
Knights of Badassdom - DVD

Used store credit to rent a couple of DVDs from Hasting's yesterday.

The Robocop reboot doesn't hold a candle to the original, but it was nearly as gawd awful as thought it would be. And, ya know, Michael Keaton needs to be in more stuff. I miss seein' him in movies.

LS was an alright movie, too, based on the true story of a SEAL team and Operation Red Wing. I do wish it hadn't started with showin' the survivor and then flashin' back to how he got there. Hate that particular story device. It was a really good cast, too.

Took those DVDs back today, and used store credit to rent two more movies.

Watchin' KoB now...its alright, so far. Maybe I'd be laughin' more if I were into D&D and LARPs.

33. Charlie Wilson's War: A

Starring Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, Amy Adams and the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman this 2007 film about a Texas Congressman who sat at the crossroads of several finance committees helped fund the Afghan rebels in the 80's to defeat the Soviets.

I found it to be an engaging film and while it was based on a true story I've no doubt some of the historicity was altered for dramatic reasons per standard Hollywood flare. All the same if you've not seen this film, add it to your rotation.

The other rental from Hasting's the other night, I wanted to see if Frozen lived up to the hype. It was pretty good...not the best Disney since the dawn of time like folks tried to make it sound, but still, a good movie. And now that I've seen 'Let It Go' in context, that song makes a lot more sense.

And I liked the "Get a Horse!" short on the DVD, too.

Watched the two CwaCoM movies. Both were pretty silly, but the first was the better of the two.

Watchin' the second season of Orange is the New Black on Netflix today.

It's a tired, old formula. Bad boy falls for girl, who makes him into a good upstanding member of society. Except Shane West doesn't seem bad as he's supposed to be. Neither he or Moore can raise the plot from pedestrian to watchable. You know there is going to be speed bumps in their relationship and the moment they bring out the leukemia fact, she is either doomed to die or have some miracle recovery. There's nothing that makes this any different from any other movie of the sappy teen girl drama

17) Gridiron Gang - C

Another tired plot, the misfits who someone overcome their differences with each other and any personal deficiencies to grow and become a team. You know the movie would be over in ten minutes if they didn't actually come together. While I enjoy that the movie was based on a true story and there is a real coach out there doing things to help people, there's nothing new here.
