What were your reading experiences in 2013?

I've enjoyed the "What did you read" threads from the past couple of years. They always give me a chance to look back at what I've read over the course of the previous twelve months and reflect. I've been keeping an eye out for a new thread for this year but hadn't seen one. The last couple were started by StefanSeitz but, when I checked, he hasn't posted since last January.

So, without further ado, I'll go ahead and start a new thread this year with proper credit given to StefanSeitz. StefanSeitz, if you planned to quietly sneak back in here after a year and start a new thread, then I humbly apologize for stealing your thunder.

What did you read last year, Star Trek or otherwise?

Here is my list, in reading order.

Oh, and Happy New Year everyone!

- Byron

Re: What were your reading experiences in 2013?

I didn't really read anything until I went on vacation in November. While there, I read all 10 Shatnerverse novels. Kirk is my favorite character, and I was curious how Shatner handled him. I found the series to be easy to read, here are my basic impressions of each:

Collision Course - It was pretty good. I liked the characterization of young Kirk and the stuff about Kodos. I wish Trial Run hadn't been cancelled.
Ashes of Eden - I liked exploring this particular period of Kirk's life. Some people seemed OOC at times, but overall it was a fun story.
The Return - I really enjoyed this one, it might be my favorite. Plenty of good moments with the Borg.
Avenger - This was good too, it moved at a fast pace, the quarantine idea was interesting, the stuff involving Sarek less so.
Spectre - This started off pretty good, but it could be a little out there at times.
Dark Victory - Not as good as the last one, it was convoluted but still entertaining
Preserver - Some interesting ideas, but a disappointing finale in some ways.
Captain's Peril - I'm torn, I appreciated it trying to do something smaller scale and more intimate, but it wasn't as engrossing as the others, the flashbacks were well done though
Captain's Blood - This was more like it, one of my favorites and an interesting exploration of the Remans
Captain's Glory - The Totality is an interesting concept, there was some good action in the book. I'd say it was a fitting finale.

Re: What were your reading experiences in 2013?

Read 101 books this year. Didn't have a goal until I was in the mid 90's then though hey, I should try for a hundred. There were a couple audio books in there but mostly the hight count was due to blasting though some of the old numbered ST books, and almost caught up on all the new stuff except for 3 TOS novels form last year, a bunch of Richard Stark and Hard Case Crimes novels, some Maigret's. The kind of stuff you can read pretty quickly.

Re: What were your reading experiences in 2013?

Last year I read 22 novels, novellas, comic book trade paperback collections, and comic books arcs. This is all based off of my Shelfari account, so there are a few things that aren't exact. When I read individual comic issues, I didn't count them until I had finished the whole arc, so I wouldn't end up with a million individual issues. I also read a few short stories and parts of onmibuses, but since I didn't complete them I didn't include them.

Star Trek:The Next Generation: Indistinguishable from Magic by David McIntee (novel)

ST:Typhon Pact: The Struggle Within by Christopher L. Bennett (e-book novella)

Eureka: Substitution Method by Cris Ramsay (novel)

Wonder Woman Volume 1: Blood by Brian Azzarello (writer) & Cliff Chiang (artist)
(comic TPB)

ST:TP: Plagues of Night by David R. George III (novel)

Star Wars: Outbound Flight by Timothy Zahn (novel)

Justice League Dark Volume 1: In The Dark by Peter Milligan (writer) & Mikel Janin (artist) (comic TBP)

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones by Cassandra Clare (novel)

Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Season 8 Volume 2: No Future For You by Brian K. Vaughn (writer), Joss Whedon (writer), Georges Jeanty (artist), and Cliff Richards (artist) (comic TPB)

Wolverine & The X-Men by Jason Aaron (writer), Chris Bachalo (artist) & Nick Bradshaw (artist) (comic TPB)

Magic Burns (Kate Daniels book 2) by Ilona Andrews (novel)

ST:TP: Raise the Dawn by DRG III (novel)

Smallville Season 11: Guardian by Brian Miller (writer) & Pere Perez (artist) (12 issue digital comic arc)

The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games book 1) by Suzanne Collins (novel)

SW: Legacy Volume 3: Claws of the Dragon by John Ostrander (writer/plot) & Jan Duursema (artist/plot) (comic TPB)

ST:TP: Brinkmanship by Una McCormack (novel)

ST: Seven Deadly Sins by Dayton Ward and Kevin Dilmore, Britta Dennison, James Swallow, Keith R.A. DeCandido, Greg Cox, David McIntee, & Marc Giller (Novella collection read off and on 2010-2013)

WW V2: Guts by Brian Azzarello (writer) & Cliff Chiang (artist)

I've only kept track of my reading since i got a kindle a few years ago. In 2011 I read 40 books, and 70 in 2012. I was aiming to double that in 2013, but didnt quite make it - Instead I managed 120. I didn't read that much this year (2013 except for my college books) but i started reading the myriad universes novels story and so far the Short novel A less perfect Union is holding my attention and it makes me wish they could do a complete series of novels of the United Earth Starship Enterprise and it's adventures maybe even a book where Commander Kirk finally becomes Captain Kirk.

I didn't keep track of my read books in 2013. It was a bad year overall for me and I didn't read from around April until late September. I've read several books about President Kennedy's assassination, plus a few YA series, and some standalone novels.

Re: What were your reading experiences in 2013?

I tried to vary my reading subject matter in 2013 as I'd read a lot of Star Trek in previous years. I still ended up with a lot of 'Trek, but there's some humour, original fiction and classics amongst the (still generally excellent) Trek.

~ Star Trek: Alien Spotlight (volumes 1 & 2)
~ Star Trek: Captain's Log
~ Stellar Cartography: The Starfleet Reference Library, by Larry Nemecek
~ The Poisoned Chalice (Star Trek: The Fall), by James Swallow
~ A Ceremony of Losses (Star Trek: The Fall), by David Mack
~ Saga (volume two), by Brian K Vaughan & Fiona Staples
~ The Crimson Shadow (Star Trek: The Fall), by Una McCormack
~ The Things, by Peter Watts
~ Revelation and Dust (Star Trek: The Fall), by David R. George III
~ Trillions, by Nicholas Fisk
~ Moon over Luna, by David R. George III
~ Saga (volume one), by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples
~ Ex Machina (Star Trek), by Christopher L. Bennett
~ Pawns of War (Star Trek: Romulans), by John Byrne
~ Echoes and Refractions: The Chimes at Midnight (Star Trek: Myriad Universes), by Geoff Trowbridge
~ Echoes and Refractions: A Gutted World (Star Trek: Myriad Universes), by Keith R. A. DeCandido
~ The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde, by Robert Louis Stevenson
~ Deep Cover, by Ian Botham & Dennis Coath
~ Fallen Gods (Star Trek: Titan), by Michael A. Martin
~ The Picture of Dorian Gray, by Oscar Wilde
~ A Stitch in Time (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), by Andrew J. Robinson
~ Summon the Thunder (Star Trek: Vanguard), by Dayton Ward & Kevin Dilmore
~ Harbinger (Star Trek: Vanguard), by David Mack
~ Rise of the Federation: A Choice of Futures (Star Trek: Enterprise), by Christopher L. Bennett
~ Waiting on a Friend, by T. J. Leng
~ What's Past: Distant Early Warning (Star Trek: Starfleet Corps of Engineers), by Dayton Ward & Kevin Dilmore
~ The Stuff of Dreams (Star Trek: The Next Generation), by James Swallow
