Merry Christmas to all...

Merry Christmas and best of the New Year from an old-fashioned Santa to everyone on the TrekBBS.

(spreading some old-fashioned cheer at the local Brockville Employment And Education Centre.)

Merry Christmas.

For me, an old fashioned Santa would be one called Father Christmas. We never called him Santa when I was a child.

The guy's got a lot of names in many languages.

I'm French Canadian and in French his name is Pere Noel which translates exactly to Father Christmas.

Historically (well, back to the late 18th to early 19th century America) the name went from St. Nicholas to SanteClaus to Santa Claus. Santa is basically a reboot of St. Nicholas minus the ecclesiastical trappings. But the more historical St. Nicholas (with the ecclesiastical trappings) or Sinterklass does continue in the Netherlands I believe.

Joyeux Noel!

Re: Merry Christmas to all...

Here in Southeastern Ontario it looks very Christmasy. We will most certainly have a very white Christmas, the kind you see on greeting cards. Mind you it's gotten a little messy with some freezing rain and fine ice pellets mixed in with the snow, but it's plenty white nonetheless.

Uh, Italian, Latin and Sardinian are wrong.

In Italian, "Buone feste natalizie" would be "Happy christmas holidays": technically correct, but unusual. So it's either "Buon Natale", or "Buone feste".

In Latin, "Natale hilare" means "Funny Christmas" (the case is also wrong): a more accurate translation would be "Felicem Natalem (Christi)".

In Sardinian, the common greeting is "Bona Paschixedda".
