Re: 80's music

Bow Wow Wow's front-woman was volcanically hot. I wonder whatever happened to them.

The underrepresented thus far...

Dead or Alive:

Tears for Fears:

Pere Ubu:

(I later discovered their Seventies stuff was actually better, but that album was my introduction.)

The Pixies:

Kraftwerk (the band that inspired the nihilists' fictional "Autobahn" band from The Big Lebowski, really did most of their best work in the Seventies but nevertheless):

Goth-that-wasn't-The Smiths, for example Sisters of Mercy:

...Bauhaus:

...Skinny Puppy:

...National Velvet (early favourites of Canada's answer to MTV, MuchMusic):

...and Siouxsie and the Banshees:

...and that's just scratching the surface. I can't remember if Joy Division was late Seventies or early Eighties, but they were the wellspring from which a lot of it flowed:

Can't forget "alternative music" from before the era when that was just another shitty corporate branding term; Stump:

Honorable mention to a massive contemporary retro movement that's doing Eighties synth music that the Eighties would have been proud of. Too much of it to mention here, but look up bands like Powerglove, Dynatron, and Lazerhawk (the one I'm listening to right now):

What, no Elton John?

One of Elton and Bernie's best songs, and one of the best story videos of the decade.

Sir Elton's gayest video ever!

The usual story: people being fired from the band (including the front-woman), break-ups, reformation, another round of break-ups, and another reformation with only one member of the original band left that nobody actually remembers.

^ Wasn't the lead singer like 13 or 14 when the band first formed? Ew.

Re: 80's music

I remember when I was in junior high and I heard "I Want Candy," I was of course too intellectually deficient to realize it was about drugs. (As was Martika's "Toy Soldiers" of course)

It's a remake of a song from 1965. Pretty sure its about sexual desire.

I think the drugs rumour came about because the song was gender-flipped for Bow Wow Wow and "Candy" is a weird name for a dude.
