Why would you recommend what you're watching right now?

We used to have several quite gamey and/or spammy threads about whatever you might be watching right now in misc.

I would like this thread to be the one where you not merely express what you're watching, but also explain why and, most pertinently; why you think it's worthy of our attention...

I mean: if you've just (re-)discovered a film (or TV-show or an episode or whatnot) and think it's the "best 'evah'", this is the place to post about it.

Not that I don't like the "What are you watching?"-threads in the lounges... just that I would like something a little bit more fulfilling, something that also contained the why and some what does that mean to me!

As in:

Right now I'm watching Once Upon a Time in the West.
Mostly because I haven't watched it in ages, as in: since I watched it while being 'baby'sat by my western-crazy grandma, but also because I recently was watching The Story of Film: An Odyssey and suddenly found that I might have been missing some of the most profound parts of the film -so I felt I had to watch it again.
(Still the best 'western' I've ever seen).

What are you watching now, that you'd recommend, and why?

If anyone's ever going to ask me when the last time a film made me shed a tear... tonight was it! -that ending is just so perfect!

The original BBC trilogy of House of Cards, starring Sir Ian Richardson. It's intelligently written, with clever characters and plots, and brilliantly handled asides from the main character. The fourth wall doesn't exist and we get to hear all his deliciously evil thoughts and schemes. It's fascinating, fun and full of dark humor.

"You may very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment."

Now that you mention it, if you can get hold of the series, I'd recommend The Story of Film: An Odyssey to anyone with even a passing interest in cinema. Mark Cousins's narration and narrative is both a fitting personal tribute to, and a good starting point for exploring, world cinematic classics you may or may not have heard of, as well as helping you see films you love in a new light. I saw the TV series when it was first broadcast on More 4 and was enthralled by it.

I would also highly recommend the feature length documentary TT3D: Closer To The Edge. A film about the people taking part in the 2010 Isle of Man Tourist Trophy (TT) motorcycle races, it is exciting, fascinating, exhilarating, moving, and in parts funny. I'm not a motorcycle fan - I prefer my motorsport action to have 4 wheels, and I had only heard of Guy Martin from his canal boat TV shows for the BBC - but after seeing this film I became interested in the TT. Maybe one day I'll head over to the Isle of Man to see it for real.
If you can see the film in 3D, do so - it is one of the best 3D movies out there.

I think the most common way to express my feelings on what you just posted there is:

Re: Why would you recommend what you're watching right now?

Right now, I'm watching streamlined edits of Mythbusters episodes.

What's that, you ask? It's basically when people re-edit Mythbusters to remove all the redundant material, recaps, intros, outros and put all the segments in chronological order. It reduces most episodes to about 30 minutes long, and after watching a number of them, I'm finding it hard to go back.

There's a whole subreddit devoted to these things.

^ That sounds awesome. I love Mythbusters but they do go overboard with the repetition.

I'm watching Big Bang series 7 and I wouldn't recommend it to anybody. The first two seasons were way better.
