Looking for Affordable Gaming Table

I just recently bought a house after living with my parents for a while and one of my plans for my new house was to set up a game night with one or more other people.

The games that we play are just standard board games, no RPGs or miniature games or stuff like that. My problem is I have no idea if I should get a round or rectangular table, what size I should get, and where to get one that doesn't cost hundreds of dollars.

I tried looking up gaming tables on Google and I just saw countless sites that sell expensive wooden tables. We're new gamers so I don't want to put a lot of money into getting this set up in case it doesn't work out.

So I'm just looking for tips from people on how to get things going. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Find a used dining table that fits the space you have.

Yeah, you don't need anything fancy. I have a round dining table that I use. One of my friends has a rectangular table that's good for gaming, too. The rectangular one works best if you have more than 4 people.

There's definitely no need to spend a ton of money.

Re: Looking for Affordable Gaming Table

For the time being, I was planning on setting up the table in my office, but only when people came over and we played. I would need to store it when not in use.

I'm thinking of just going the folding table route and then picking up a dining table if I want to go the next step and set up a permanent space for it.

Okay, so since I am going to primarily play board games with, likely, no more than 4-5 people would a round or rectangular table be better?

Robert Maxwell, you said you have a round table. Does that work well? I know it's good for card playing, which might also be in the plans, but how about board games? I'm just afraid it might be too cramped with a rectangular table.

Re: Looking for Affordable Gaming Table

We play Small World on my dining table. This is without any leaves installed. There's ample room for 4 players. It gets a bit cramped with 5 or 6 but it's still doable. With the leaves I could probably fit more.

I was just thinking, if you could pick up a couple of folding card tables (example) and put them side-by-side, that'd be inexpensive, portable, and probably work pretty well.

Re: Looking for Affordable Gaming Table

I'm currently eyeing this table at Staples: http://www.staples.com/Office-Star-4...8#desc_content

It's affordable and a good size and I can easily store it when not in use.

If my game night catches on I was thinking about a wooden round table that can extend in case I need some extra room.

EDIT: The company my dad owns does A LOT of business with Staples. He was able to get me a great deal for that table, plus four folding chairs. In the end it's only going to cost me about $150.
