Singer would be an interesting choice. I do agree they should go for a director that has more concern for the characters and couldn't give a fuck about making Trek a roller coaster ride. I got enough of that in the two Abrams films.

Bryan Singer could have directed. Trek is truly going back into Star Wars shadows.
Star Wars is the largest IP in the world. Star Trek is always in its shadow.

Chris Nolan would have been another good choice. His name alone will bring in the money.
No.

A popular and high profile director with a good body of work should have directed the 3rd film.
Nonsense.

But such a director can't be controlled by the producers that easily. Better get a low profile actor with a smaller body of work so that he has to listen to the studio demands.

attack the block was good. but other than that, not much to say about the guy. not the best choice imo.
Why?

Star Trek will always exist in the shadow of Star Wars.

I'd rather dig my teeth out with a rusty spoon than watch a Trek movie by Nolan.

How do you become a popular, high-profile director if you're never given a chance?

Additional reports on this story now, perhaps lending more credibility to it? http://www.denofgeek.com/movies/star...to-star-trek-3

I'm starting to believe Cornish may be the guy.

Here's how you'll know if a story is actually lending more credibility to this rumour: it will not revolve around words like "linked to" and "frontrunner."

Re: Joe Cornish To Direct STAR TREK 3?

I'm wondering if the reason they want to shoot in 2014 is so they can have the film ready for Summer 2015 if Star Wars gets pushed to Summer 2016?

It all depends on much sway Kathleen Kennedy/Abrams have with Disney. From what I've read, Robert Iger is not budging and is extremely keen on hitting a 2015 release.

Personally, I'm predicting a compromise with a Christmas 2015 date.

Some interesting comments on the /Filmcast Ep. 250 podcast.

The commentators speculate that Trek 3 may get the pieces in place for a return to TV. The also talk about a reduced budget for the next film and what a troubled production Into Darkness was. They also touch on the (much-debated) disappointing(?) performance of the second film.

It's a pretty good listen; the Trek stuff starts at their Film News segment which is at 30:20.

Why was STD a troubled production? Can't listen to it right now.

That's exactly what I was thinking too, assuming the 2014 date on shooting trek3 is actually true.

I have always been skeptical about Disney releasing their 2 biggest movies in development (Avengers 2, SW 7) at around the same time (summer 2015).

They said there was some infighting between Paramount, Bad Robot and CBS over the film. It wasn't mentioned, but I also believe part of the problem was the use of Khan, as Orci and Kurtzman wanted to just do John Harrison as a new villain while Lindelof was fighting for Khan and so compromises were made.

Re: Joe Cornish To Direct STAR TREK 3?

On the podcast, those guys have a lot of it pretty much spot on (but beware STiD fans, they are not STiD fans nor Orci Trinity fans )... and their comparison of the Cornish possibility to Shane Black taking on the Iron Man franchise is interesting. (Still don't believe it will happen.) Thanks HaplessCrewman for the link, I hope I can listen to that podcast regularly.
