Natural Law beam out

My wife and I watched Natural Law last night. If you know that your shuttle is crashing and the only escape is a beam out, why would you grab an EMPTY container? Why did they not grab a med kit, which was need as soon as the materialized?

^Just checked that scene. Perhaps it was on hand, and the med kit was out of reach.
