Favorite Bands

I'm sure this thread has been done many times before, but I'm not finding one-- so time to start anew! What are some of your favorite bands/artists? What's great about them?

some of my favorites:
of Montreal- ranging from whimsical, bubbly ditties to the craziest psych pop out there, they're ever-changing and endlessly compelling

Lady Gaga- the first popular act that I actually liked and respected. Want your bad romance.

The Decemberists- folksy, high-brow, intelligent... gotta have something to cleanse the ears after a night of top 40 binging, eh?

The Beach Boys- I'm not sure Pet Sounds has ever been topped.
"Rage — Goddess, sing the rage of Peleus’ son Achilles, murderous, doomed, that cost the Achaeans countless losses" // Skeletal Lamping. thecontrollersphere. False Priest.

Too many to write 'em all down. I agree with the Beach Boys for that era definitely.

The last few years I've been into symphonic metal. I own the CD collections of several groups in that genre though not all of these fit into the genre.

After Forever
Amberian Dawn
Lacuna Coil
Leaves' Eyes
Sonata Arctica

For many years it was classic rock like Boston, Chicago, Kansas (lots of place names), Deep Purple, Led Zepplin, Lucifer's Friend, Rainbow, Rush, Styx, Uriah Heep, The Who.
Also, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Kiss, Savatage.
I have a fair sized collection of Celtic music as well.
Rimmer, on what period of history to live in-
“Well, It’d be the 19th century for me, one of Napoleon’s marshals.
The chance to march across Europe with the greatest general of all time and kill Belgians” - (White Hole).

My favourite band is Queen. To me they are the quintessential rock band, with a range striding across Metal, Glam, Rock, Pop, Jazz, Blues, Funk, Classical & Opera and more besides.

I think they are the most diverse mainstream band that has been.

My second favourite band is Stone Temple Pilots, for similar reasons.
So it goes.

I think I'd have to pick The Beatles, Led Zepplin and Emerson, Lake and Palmer.

For solo artists-Elton John, Jack Johnson, David Bowie and Cat Stevens.

I like a diversity in music, a striving to rise above common pop and, despite pop hits, I think these have all tried to do that.

My favourite band has to be Ozzy-era Black Sabbath.

I wouldn't be able to put them in order, but here's a rough list.

Most listened to / favourite of the past month-
Crazy Lixx
Steel Panther

All time favourites (in alphabetical order)-
Arch Enemy
Black Sabbath
David Lee Roth
Dream Theater
Motley Crue
Ozzy Osbourne
Skid Row
Speedway Boulvard (they only had one album, but it's one of my favourites)
Stan Bush
Van Halen / Van Hagar (both great in their own way)
Winter Rose (again, only one album, but it's one of my favourites)

Bruce Springsteen
The Gaslight Anthem
The Hold Steady
Frank Turner
The National
The Killers
She & Him
The Rolling Stones
Bob Dylan
The Clash

That's more on the Rock side, but at least half of my listening consists of Jazz, Soul, Motown and Stax kind of stuff. But that's more based around genre than actual artists.
