RIP Gene Roddenberry (1921 - 1991)

Twenty-two years ago today, Gene Roddenberry passed away. I just want to say "thank you" for his vision, his passion and his tenacity that created Star Trek and brought it to life - and that we can still relate to, enjoy and relish almost 50 years later.

Here´s to the Great Bird of the Galaxy ...

Roddenberry, Irwin Allen and my mother all died during an 8 day span in late Oct, early Nov 1991. Not a good week.

Well said, Mario, let us all try hard to contribute to Gene Roddenberry's vision of a better future for all of mankind. Our grandchildren will be grateful.

Indeed, RIP Mr Roddenberry. It's an excellent universe you created, even at it's worst.

Ironically, he died a few weeks before my birth. Curious the sort of oddities there are, he created a fictional world I've invested so much time in over the years and died the year I was born.

This is an extraordinarily true epitaph that I wholeheartedly agree with because it applies to me, too. It could not have been said any better and I am sure that Gene Roddenberry could not have wished for anything more.

Gene

Thank you for the wonderful franchise that is Star Trek. You had your flaws, like any man, but you created in Trek something unique and special, and has been added to and enjoyed by many others over the years.

As legacies go, that's pretty great.

I don't think Gene was close to the best of humanity but I've definitely wasted at least a couple thousand hours in his sandbox.

Growing up it offered an escape from what was a very difficult life. For that alone, I owe much to Mr. Roddenberry.

Absolutely. Whatever you think of him, we sure have had a hell of a lot of fun in the universe he created. May the Great Bird continue to fly!

P.S. Love that sig, BillJ!

Most of the credit goes to another poster here, SeerSGB. He made a general statement that was pretty close to my signature during a conversation in The Neutral Zone. I just kinda cleaned it up.

Thanks Gene,

for creating a wonderful universe in which ethical, moral and philosophical stories could be played out within such a wonderfully engaging premise.

The message of what we were, what we are and what we could be is timeless and full of meaning. I also wholeheartedly agree with his sentiment towards religion.

RIP

All I can add is: at least many of those hours are fun, more than are bad.

Same here. And who really cares if he was "the best of humanity" or not? Just because a writer presents certain ideas, that doesn't mean he (or she, whatever) has to necessarily live up to them.
