Unidentified Spacecraft in Into Darkness

I don't know if this design has been the topic of any previous discussion, so I bring it up again...

Between the Red Armstrong and the Enterprise, what is this? Franz Josephs' Ptolemy?

I can't see your hotlink, but if you're taking about the ship I think you're talking about, then the design has definitely been influenced by FJ's Transport/Tug class. IIRC it had a half-saucer like the Newton and red nacelle caps? I'm gonna have to rewatch the scene.

For any image at e-a-s, it's necessary to link to the page which contains it. Linking directly to the image will just return the red-and-white hotlink badge.

Damn photos keep disappearing. Maybe this one will work for more than 5 minutes. I brightened & lowered the contrast.

The ship that was circled on the other pic looks like another 3 nacelled ship, similar or identical to the one to the left.

That's what it looks like to me - an Armstrong type.

What does a saucer-only ship need with 3 nacelles?

A dreadnought I could see.

I don't know why ships need two nacelles. Or one. Or five.

The Trek physics of it all has never been explained in-verse, has itt??

Or at least to "look cool"

And being as this isn't TNG, they're probably not going to explain it

I'm not sure they ever really explained it onscreen. There was that imperative from Gene that they all had to have even numbers of nacelles.

There's no one like Roddenberry or Berman overseeing the franchise anymore, so the new films can pretty much do whatever they want.
