Is making sandwiches significantly different than spending two months salary on a diamond ring?
No, that's completely insane, too.
I agree. I told my husband NOT to get me an engagement ring. I'd rather we saved the money towards a house. He was relieved.

(For our wedding rings, we got wholesale catalogs from his sister who made jewelry at home. We went through them, made our choices, and were very happy with them.)

As for the sandwiches, well, whatever works for them. I like sandwiches, too, and experimenting with recipes can be fun.

Exactly. What does she get 300 of? And no, "thank you for the sandwich" does not count.

If he wants sandwiches and she wants to make them, I don't see a problem. As long as their relationship isn't abusive or something, it's certainly no skin off my ass.

I love a good sandwhich, i love a freshly opened loaf of bread for the thick white outsiders, with thick fresh dark crusts.

Sounds like he made a joke and she decided to take him seriously. To me it sounds moronic and dumb. But I am a bit negative. And I don't know wither the woman or the man.

Well if you read the article, it implies that the man spends more time in the Kitchen. If it works for them then good luck to them.

Though would we be having this debate if the roles where reversed and it was the female that said you are 300 sandwichs away from an engagement ring?

I am not sure, being not much of a sandwich eater myself. I'd rather have a man take me in his arms when I am frustrated, tired or sad than having him make me a sandwich.
Anyone who reduces a relationship to getting a meal has imo no idea of the real values in life. The point of a relationship is to stand together and share life, not just a piece of bread.

Re: Hon, make me a sandwich

Saying he reduced their relationship to a meal seems like a bit of a stretch. From the article:

Last July, after Smith’s boyfriend Eric Schulte ate a sandwich she made for him, he exclaimed: “Honey, you’re 300 sandwiches away from an engagement ring!”
This just sounds like a playful quip he made after she thoughtfully made him a great sandwich.

And her reaction:

E didn’t say “cook me 300 sandwiches or I’m leaving you!” He gave me a challenge—a dare, to some degree—and the type-A, Tracy Flick side of me can’t stand being challenged. I will prove to him and the rest of the world I can make the 300 sandwiches.
This just seems like a bit of harmless fun if you ask me.

They're doing something wrong if a sandwich is better than sex.
Or maybe it's just a -really- good sandwich... I'm kinda curious now.
