Spider Man 3 ('07) vs. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ('14): VOTE

Ever since the "Spider Man ('02) vs. The Amazing Spider-Man ('12): VOTE", I've been deluged with PM requests to make a sequel thread for the sequels films. (*Okay, not really.) Now, the default pairing for such a thread would of course be 2004's Spider-Man 2 versus this year's The Amazing Spider-Man 2... but, well, that wouldn't be much of a matchup, would it? I myself prefer the new movies overall, and am not the biggest fan of SM2, but there's no question it was a better and more successful flick on its own terms than ASM2 was on its.

So, to keep things interesting, let's match up 2007's Spider-Man 3 with this year's Amazing Spider-Man 2 instead. I actually think there's a fair amount of thematic and plot overlap in those two movies to justify the matchup, more so than SM2 vs. ASM2 would have: both movies have multiple villains, both have Harry Osborn going full evil, and both deal with the troubles Peter has navigating and maintaining an existing romantic relationship.

So, you all have your choices above. As before, please be honest and specify when you last saw SM3, so we know how fresh you opinions/memories of that movie are. Begin!

As usual, no frigging contest. The Garfield/Webb films are just better overall.

The only edge SM3 gets here is that Sandman is the best of a crap bunch of villains.

It's not the best film ever made, but everything in ASM2 is better that Spider-Man 3

This is not even a contest. I walked out of Amazing Spider-Man 2 having had a good time. I walked out of Spider-Man 3 feeling angry and depressed. Pretty much everything about ASM2 is better than SM3.

Pretty much it.. i can't understand how Raimi was able to drop the ball so hard after the awesome first two movies (and studio meddling can't be the only excuse).

While i'm not such a big fan of Amazing Spiderman they are good movies and AS2 blows Spiderman 3 just out of the water in every category possible.

As underwhelming and flawed as TAS2 was it didn't set-up its last act through the Exposition New Channel, or have pointless scenes of its stars singing and dancing.

Oh.... the dancing.

I had a friend who walked in so late to Spider-Man III that one of the first things he remembers is the venom entity taking over Peter. He told me it was one of the longest, most horrible movies he had ever seen. He laughed when I told him how much of the movie he missed because he thought that he had only missed ten minutes or so. Or as he put it, he didn't really feel he missed anything.

Honestly, I hated all the Raimi movies - way too slapstick and McGuire is just not even remotely Spiderman. Asm2 had issues, but I don't think it was as bad as a lot of people are saying (not just here, but in general). If it had been trimmed down a little bit more for a better focus, cut out the whole Rhino thing and give Electro a bit more of a spine, than it would have been a good movie. Honestly I think the new Green Goblin was fantastic, though seriously underused. Better than all the Raimi goblins, which were one of the only parts of the Raimi trilogy that was actually decent. I still gave the villains to SM3, though, since I also moderately enjoyed the Sandman and the Rhino and Electro were just bad.

It ended up being a party-line vote for me, too. I almost voted Raimi for directing, because there's far too many idiotic and tonally jarring moments in ASM2, but SM3 is just so maddeningly dull. Maybe I should have abstained, but I did like a lot of ASM2 moments here and there, so, a clean sweep it was.

I voted for TAS2 in every regard except villains. I enjoyed both Jamie Foxx and Dane DeHaan but I did think that Thomas Hayden Church made a pretty good Sandman. And while DDH was good as Harry/Goblin, the relationship between Peter and him was a bit rushed, while we'd had 3 films to establish that dynamic in the previous series. Paul Giamatti was under-used as Rhino and while Venom was undoubtedly badly served by SM3, I thought Topher Grace did a good enough job in selling Eddie as a sort of Peter-gone-wrong.
