My initial suspicion when I saw Skye meet up with her boyfriend was that she was a traitor. Then I realized, nah, it was just a booty call. She's got a great bod, by the way.

Could the clairvoyant possibly be Mentallo? I'm not sure if clairvoyance accurately describes his power set, but in the comics he does have ties to Hydra, AIM and SHIELD and isn't typically associated with the X-characters.

What about Mr. Blue? He's not a mutant and they never did pick up that particular thread.

Maybe another rogue Asgardian? I'm not up on the comic lore, but Loki can't be the only one of those in it for themselves.

Oh, yeah...and after the very conspicuous disclaimers last week about there being no such thing as ESP...turns out a mystery man in the enemy camp is a clairvoyant....
Again, nobody said it was impossible, just that it's never been proven to May's knowledge.

Well, just because the bad guy is clairvoyant doesn't mean that the good guys know it...

I mean this was their first encounter with a guy with presumably natural pryokinetic abilities.

The case of the week wasn't that special, but at least we found out more about the Centipede group. So Skye was finally found out, I was expecting that plot to last the entire season. Glad that is now out in the open.

Skye looked amazing in her underwear! I'm surprised more people here haven't mentioned that!

Re: Agents of SHIELD. Season 1 Discussion Thread

The idea that SHIELD wouldn't have brought him in and either trained him to use his powers more effectively for their purposes (or just locked him up) when they first found him is pretty much completely unbelievable. No way Fury would have just let an asset like that go to waste. If they had made it less impressive, like little candle flames on his fingertips or something like that, I might have bought it.

He lived near a power plant when it burned down? I was expecting that to be a joke but then they just let it go. The old "radioactive material made them super" chestnut hasn't been a viable origin in anything but parody for decades.

Otherwise not a bad episode, but it does continue the "live action comic book" thing down to having very 2-dimensional guest stars every week. 'Scorch' could have been much more interesting, especially if he didn't just go crazy at the end. Pretty much every script so far has had an 'early draft' feel, taking the easy way out of every week's plot. I know the team behind this show is capable of more, and I just don't get why they've set the bar so low.

His powers are about as useful as a blowtorch.

Even after they gave him steroids, he was only as useful as three blowtorches.

Hawkeye shoots arrows really good. Your argument is invalid.

Re: Agents of SHIELD. Season 1 Discussion Thread

Hawkeye never misses.

And Fury wants him to use a Rifle.

Before the steroids Scorche's "range" was 8 feet.

After the steroids it was 12 feet.

And here's the thing about fire.

Unless you stand still for about 3 minutes until it kills you, if he can even get it that hot, fire only really, really hurts.

And that's if he's not going up against people in body armour.

I'm spending a really long time to say that a gun is so much better than his pyrokensis.

Did you every see the Secret Circle?

They spent all season trying to make this magic Crystal skull, which only worked if the chosen one used it, and could only knock people over, with the force of a runaway shopping trolley.

Some superpowers just ain't that super.

Re: Agents of SHIELD. Season 1 Discussion Thread

He burned someone to cinders in a few seconds even after the centipede formula wore off and as far as we've seen, he had only really tried to develop it beyond showing off to girls for that few hours he was in their lab. He was able to create a shield of fire that vaporized the sleepy-gun projectiles instantly. He was shooting fireballs across a pretty huge room. You're really under-selling what he has to offer an Avengers-like unit. He is basically The Human Torch without flight.

He cornered her, and she stopped moving.

But here's the real issue.

Imagine the lawsuits if he tries to be a cape.

Black ops super spy, sure.

But if he's a Cape, working for S.H.I.E.L.D. above board, anyone getting what looks like sun burn in his proximity is going to hire a lawyer and try to sue for a hellicarrier.

Re: Agents of SHIELD. Season 1 Discussion Thread

Did you see how easy he was to convince? They attacked and kidnapped him and he was still hot to trot for whatever they wanted him to do. SHIELD could have easily turned him into a special ops asset pre-Avengers and if their using the Hulk is any sign, law suits aren't a huge concern for them.

Re: Agents of SHIELD. Season 1 Discussion Thread

He was easy to convince because he was a tool.

Right there in his file.

A Street magician?

That's fame whoring 1 oh 1.

I really wasn't thinking about the hot Doctor, but yes, he did put her down as easily as a 5 year old with a Saturday Night Special... But look at the mess!

He's not black ops. Stealth in and out quiet like David fricking Niven.

Scorch would leave too much of a mess behind, him.

There's no deniablity in sending Scorch into a hotzone.

Hmm?

Why would he put up with S.H.I.E.L.D. monitoring him?

Either they were threatening him with a secret underground prison, or he was collecting a S.H.I.E.L.D. stipend to sit on his thumbs.

There's a pretty fantastic likelihood that he was being paid not to be a super hero.

Kristin Wiig is gorgeous.

Re: Agents of SHIELD. Season 1 Discussion Thread

I had a cat named Scorch once. He was severely mentally challenged. Had all kinds of issues. The only way you could get him to sit nicely with you was to let him suckle on your clothing and if you stopped him he would bite you hard enough to draw blood. As soon as that name popped up I couldn't help but think of him as the human incarnation of my retarded cat.

He wouldn't be black ops, he would be special ops. The SHIELD equivalent of the punt returner. He has a very specific skill set for limited situations. You drop him into a building you need to not exist anymore and he burns everything inside. He can melt a hole in a safe, or shake someone's hand and boil their blood. Heat powers have all kinds of applications if you think creatively.

Re: Agents of SHIELD. Season 1 Discussion Thread

He only has usable heat powers at that level if you are willing to allow human vivisection.

If S.H.I.E.L.D. would give their capes super steroids, why wouldn't they give their regular stormtroopers regular steroids?

Experimental untested supersteroids can't be healthy.

Even if the Hellicarrier was floating above international waters, I don't think they could get away with that, without doing some serious reach-around with their accountability and oversight.

You know what Flowerdress reminded of?

In tv/movies (real life) when a beautiful women buys a guy a drink, takes him back to her room, ties him to the bed "because it's sexy" and then the surgeons in masks enter to remove a kidney.

She took a (metaphorical) kidney by kidnapping him, and he just gave her his other one because all the blood between his ears was rushing to his ego, when he should have been running.

Does S.H.I.E.L.D. hire morons?

He would have to be a lot more powerful than I saw, than you think he has, to compensate for an IQ of 80.
