You don't say you're resigning if you want to be taken off a project. You say... i want to be taken off the project. I don't think you got how messed up Coulson thinks the Tahiti project was. he was so disturbed by it that he would have nothing to do with it. And if SHIELD was adamant that project was a legit course of action, and insisted on continuing the program, Coulson was finished. An organization that would go down that path is not what Coulson signed up for. It's very Hyrda-ish. Obviously, Fury put Coulson's fears to rest and he didn't resign. Of course, Fury also bullshit him as we know.
I agree.

Coulson's death ultimately united the Avengers. Coupled with Hydra working alongside SHIELD, he may fear the Avengers might disband should his secret of being alive comes out.
Sorry but that is not only completely unsupported by any dialogue from Coulson, it is not a good story.
I posed it as a theory (hence the use of the word may). Coulson obviously has his reasons, otherwise he wouldn't keep his death a secret.

If you can, you should watch the show again. Coulson said he was handing in his resignation. It's not clear though if it's from SHIELD or that specific project.
Well we only saw one half of that conversation; we're missing Fury's response. It's likely he was resigning from SHIELD, but Fury didn't accept his resignation and instead took his advice and shut down TAHITI.
We know Fury doesn't like to throw away his toys. He could have "shut it down" by giving it a skeleton security that would only respond to a certain call sign to be utilized when needed (like we've seen, so that would mean they shot SHIELD agents). That would explain how Hydra didn't know about it and how Coulson could have been the head of the department prior to its "closing", and then that memory was erased.

The best part is that means that, most likely, Coulson murdered his own men.

As pointed out, while Coulson led the team into the facility, Garrett and Ward did the killing.

Under his leadership. It doesn't matter one iota who pulled the trigger. Their deaths are his responsibility. 100%. Especially since he could have easily have had them go in with icers instead of standard firearms.

Sorry, no backpeddling out of this one, kiddos.

More proof that Coulson is a member of HYDRA. Hail HYDRA!!

Just kidding. I think there is more to the story which will probably covered in season 2.

Coulson didn't have the code word. Their deaths were inevitable as night and day.

When Ward was tricking those two dimbulbs into opening the door to the fridge, those two dead fucks deserve posthumous charges of treasonous idiocy.

If you do shit before you hear the code word, you might as well be the enemy.

Isn't Garrett the same level as Coulson? Wouldn't they share equal amounts of guilt?

Garrett and Ward had their own agenda in going to the Guest House.

Coulson was leading the team on that particular mission, and he was eager to go in there with guns blazing. No one forced him to do it, and he didn't stop anyone else from going hot.

Re: Agents of SHIELD. Season 1 Discussion Thread

Coulsen was shooting almost certainly S.H.I.E.L.D. Agents and that makes him sad.

Garret was shooting almost certainly S.H.I.E.L.D. Agents and that makes him erect.

Can you spot the difference?

Depends on who hired them, and for what ends. They didn't recognize Coulson, so they weren't connected with his leadership. Different than Ward & Garrett at the Fridge, where the guards had some issues with them, but recognized them as friendlies...just friendlies breaking protocol.

unfortunately, they made the wrong exception to protocol.

It was Garrett's call to blow the doors. Now that I think of it, I wouldn't be surprised if Coulson suggested night-night weapons and Garrett declined. Have we ever seen that type of weaponry in Coulson's arsenal. It seems Garrett pulled those weapons from his locker. I believe it was a joint mission and Garrett is as much to blame as Coulson (at least).
