How many science and technology people do you think have died?
A not insignificant number, I would image. Right off the bat, you have Abraham Erskine. More recently, Loki wiped out the entire team studying the Tesseract with the exception of Selvig. In fact, Widow mentions that Loki killed 80 people in two days and I would have to think that most of them were SHIELD agents.

What bothers me more about the Wall of Valor scene is, why did Skye consider Bucky Barnes's name worth mentioning aloud?...
Maybe it's because he was the first name on the list...
Nope. Erskine was before Bucky.

And I have a few theories about the Sif appearance. I have read that Sif comes to Midgard with a very "specific mission", and the producers and promotions have been promising that it's "all connected". Therefore, it will have to do with Peter MacNicol's Elliot Randolph.

Either Elliot Randoph was actually an Asgard-class liar and was really a sociopathic criminal on Asgard who came to Earth to escape prosecution and Sif has come down to bring him back, or Centipede decides to incorporate a little Asgardian DNA into their soldiers and kidnap Randolph and Sif comes to stop it. In either instance, Heimdall could've noticed what was happening and alerted Sif or whoever he would report such a thing to.

Or Sif finds out that Fury used Asgardian tech to resurrect Coulson

On Sciences deaths...I'm sure there are a few lab accidents in that mix.

So Bucky survived WWII?

Isn't that the point of the Winter Soldier plot, that we thought that he didn't survive, until we found out that he did?

The wall goes back to 1941 and includes SSR...that's the first group of logos on the wall.

Officially, he did not survive. The wall is reflecting his death in wwii

ETA: As for an It's All Connected explanation for why Sif is coming to Earth, my idea is that the Pagan hate group is Hydra, which is AIM, which is Centipede. Given their use of the Berserker staff, that makes it Asgardian business.

They're a little too well-dispersed across the entire post-SSR history for that. The fact that there are three logos and three departments (the latter a fact introduced and emphasized in this episode), and that one of the logos resembles the Science division logo at the top of the wall, would suggest that it's the three departments.
I still suspect not "three departments" - because SHIELD Academy likely has far more than three faculty divisions for various reasons involving long explanations of continuity - but three eras of operating history.

Shouldn't that result in superpowers and not death?

Getting superpowers from an authorized bit of SHIELD sci-tech lab work gets you filed in the "registered gifted" index, not a name-listing on the local Wall of Valor.

Lab accident equals superpowers. I think that's a rule. You only wind up on the wall if they think it killed you. ( Then you come back and kill people you hold responsible.)

end result is their name goes up on the wall

Re: Agents of SHIELD. Season 1 Discussion Thread

Since we have about two weeks to kill, I thought I'd bring up something else. When deciding which characters the show can use and which they can't, Marvel did an interesting thing. Rather than say "these are the characters we plan to use elsewhere, don't use them," they gave a list of specific characters who could be used. At the same time, if there are other characters the show wants to use, they're free to ask and get permission. Graviton is an example of the latter and I suspect Blizzard was as well.

It seems unlikely that Marvel's list consists entirely of C-list villains, so the question is who they would give permission to use. Certainly SHEILD agents like Hand are likely choices, but I'm curious what villains you would think could belong on a list like this.

I'm beginning to think that "The Index" is sort of a meta-joke aimed at the list of characters available to AoS.

Skye: "You have a list?"

Coulson: "It's a very short list."
