The comics still aren't canon, STID blatantly ignored and contradicted them.
It didn't ignore them at all, in fact it went out of its way to REFERENCE them on three separate occasions. The only contradiction is Kirk saying that he hasn't lost any crewmembers since he took command of the Enterprise; this could be explained by him believing (with cause, maybe?) that Gary Mitchell is still alive somewhere.
And what about the officers Gary Mitchell killed, like Kelso?
Same as the prime universe: he completely forgot about Kelso. Probably didn't even add him to the official casualty list.

I voted 'no' because I had reduced interest in the Borg after they were defeated so easily at the beginning of TNG season four, dwindling interest after each Hugh episode, and none at all after the Queen was introduced.

If it were possible to reboot the Borg to the decentralized unstoppable horror as depicted in "Q Who" then my interest in seeing them again might be rekindled.
That's exactly why I voted yes.

Because if JJ Abrams wants to do something new and unexpected with the Borg, the only thing he can really do is to capitalize on their original depiction and make it fifty times scarier.

No adapting, no dastardly schemes, no mustache-twirling Borg Queen, no ridiculous Bond Villain assimilation plots. Just make the Borg an unstoppable and stupendously destructive menace that's utterly impossible to understand, let alone reason with.

If you take the basic plot of the Doomsday Machine and put a 23rd century Borg ship in place of the planet killer, you've got yourself a movie.
As much as a non-fan I am of the Borg, I would be opened to that. The next question is: Can we actually get a tight enough script to appropriately mix the drama, action, and characterization?

I'd be all for the Borg appearing in the next film.

It would make sense from a financial point of view.

And also, Kirk is the only captain who's never got to face off against the Borg. It's time he got his chance

Maybe to Yes...as long as the film is not rushed. a 2 hr 50 minutes borg film might be great and above all no more REVENGE STORY LINES.

Nah, the movie's release is still two years away. They're going to first try to dick us around and make us guess if it's the Borg or not.

not so sure if they'll do that this time. think JJA recently said something about wishing theyd come out with Khan beforehand and not done the whole is he/isn't he thing.

still, maybe they'll manage to keep the main villain under wraps until a teaser trailer attached to a big Paramount release next year (summer - T5? or Xmas - MI5?)

Oh, I know it's unlikely they'll go that route again. Abrams has admitted it was a mistake to keep Khan a secret and Orci has said he wants to cut back on the secrecy for Trek XIII. But I can't resist a cheap shot or a low blow when I see one.

Borgs could be threatening. Enterprise could find a Borg probe damaged in deep space or in an unexplored planet with some borg still alive.

No. Borg are a 24 Century villain. Trek 3 doesn't need a villain. It needs an alien threat or not even a threat at all. I want a fun lighthearted adventure for the crew. No more Giant ships, no more stopping off at Earth, No more KHAAAAAAN. Just Kirk and company on a grand new adventure exploring Space, the unknown.

Re: Should the Borg be the villain in Trek 3?

Im kind of hoping they up the horror/dread/scares into the next Trek...make it really frightening and add abit of body gore etc (they can get away with quite abit in PG13 now)...leaning more towards the sense of dread in TNG Conspiracy (which had a chest burst straight out of Alien and an exploding head like in Scanners!! How did they get away with that!?), and all the early Borg eps and First Contact (although that was very action orientated like 'Aliens'). And TWOK certainly had an eerie atmosphere full of dread with elements of a vast, darker universe at play - almost as dark as the RScott Alien verse (it also had a certain Scanners/Cronenberg feel with the bugs, disintegration killings etc)

there was some horror elements in ST09/STID but not too much (e.g. the opening of ST09 with the kelvin alone in deep space coming across a gigantic monster of a ship and no one around to help, stranded on Delta Vega, Neros mind bugs, Khan going into full on Khan mode on the Vengence) - it was mainly action . so maybe bring in some horror for ST3 - after all the original series had an eerie, uncanny vibe not a million light years from 'The Twilight Zone' - The Enterprise charting a shadow haunted universe that hid some deeply strange and terryfying things. maybe return a little of that supernatural awe and dread to the next film

maybe the borg would be the best bet for that

First Contact will be twenty years old by the time Star Trek 3 comes out. There is likely a large portion of the movie audience that have never even seen it.
