That's an easy one. George Kirk's sacrifice gets me choked up every time.

Re: Favorite Opening Sequence? (Spoilers)

The Thor Kirk 2009 intro. Easily one of the best scenes in all of Star Trek.

STID intro is great too but in a completely different way. Not as emotionally powerful as the 2009.

Re: Favorite Opening Sequence? (Spoilers)

Emotionally powerful doesn't necessary mean better for me though, thats like comparing Star Wars to Shawshank, the Enterprise rising out of the water and the sand drawing merging into the Enterprise in space (with the volcanic ashes becoming the stars no less) are aweseome creative scenes to say nothing of the part where Spock accepts his death on the volcano. Brilliant.

There's no denying the ST09 opener is a classic Trek scene though. I find picking between them almost impossible. In fact I haven't voted in the poll yet.

The opening of 09 is probably the best scene I'ver seen in a Star Trek movie, emotionally extremly powerful and Thor's death made me cry at the theatre.
The opening of iD was nice and fun and visually stunning but nothing special, really

The opening sequence of ST09 is the best 12 minutes of Star Trek. Ever.

I like the Into Darkness opening better, but, I have to choose 09 because Captain Robau is a bad ass.

2009. It was very gripping and made me really care about Kirk's dad. Great performances by all involved.

09 Trek: George Kirk, USS Kelvin, Capt Robau, Narada, Nero, fricken lasers, explosions and stuff - awesome sauce!

One of the best movie openings ever, IMO.

The drawing of the Enterprise, fading to the real one zooming along, cinema shaking as the ship jumps to warp, all with that beautiful nuTrek theme booming as the title card appears.... gave me goosebumps. The 09 intro, whilst excellent, didn't.

Kirk Sr. saving the Kelvin crew.

Not even close. I would say it is by far the best opening sequence in all of trek, not just the 2 new ones.

Re: Favorite Opening Sequence? (Spoilers)

Kirk Sr sacrificing himself to save his wife, newborn son, and the crew of the Kelvin is BY FAR the greatest opening scene to ANY Star Trek movie, BAR NONE. It was just beautiful. Kirk saving the Nibiru people was very cool, and a terrific scene in its own right, but it was not even close to being as good. I also thought that Nemesis had an excellent opening scene, its a pity that the rest of the movie didn't live up to it.

Re: Favorite Opening Sequence? (Spoilers)

ST09 is my favorite of the two, for spiritual reasons: "Greater love hath no man than this, than to lay down his life for his friends." We see Kirk Sr. do that at the very beginning of NuTrek. It's a lesson that Kirk Jr. really doesn't learn until the END of STID.

Into Darkness was great, but Star Trek 09 was good enough to revive my interest in a dead franchise. Star Trek 09 wins it.

Re: Favorite Opening Sequence? (Spoilers)

Both openings are terrific, but the 2009 one was more emotionally powerful. It's also nostalgic because it sold me on the idea that Abrams' Trek would work.

STiD, on the other hand, was tremendously fun and very reminiscent of TOS when the team went on wacky adventures, only with a higher budget and higher stakes this time. I was concerned about STiD being a good movie too, but watching that first scene immediately reacquainted me with the movie and I sat relieved, thinking "This is Star Trek, alright!"
