Season 9/Christmas special speculation *spoilers*

Any word on when they're going to start filming this?

Also any thoughts on what's going to happen, or what monsters may appear? Season 8 featured pretty much Doctor Who's "big three" bad guys, so maybe they should get a break ala most of season 6.

It might be nice to see the Ice Warriors return, with perhaps more than one this time. Cold War was an OK episode but at times felt too much like "Dalek" and could've worked with any monster really. Although it's possible they're the aliens in the Christmas special.

Also feel the Sontarans have been played far too much for laughs via Strax and some others, perhaps a return to the more sinister Sontarans of Classic Who and RTD's Who/SJA.

Bound to see the Weeping Angels probably. Capaldi hasn't faced them yet, although they did appear in a small role in Time Of The Doctor.

On that's note, we're probably going to see the Paternoster gang yet again-and the new UNIT, minus Osgood.

I wouldn't bring Missy back so soon but we'll probably have some developments in the Gallifrey plotline.

River was more of a Matt Smith thing, although she got a name-drop this season in "The Caretaker". Not sure she'll return, although perhaps Capaldi was the one who gave her the screwdriver? We didn't see Smith do it, although there were those webisodes that implied that he might have.

I'm thinking we might get a new companion fairly soon, although Clara might still return for at least part of the season. I wonder if we'll actually have her die, apart from one-off companions like Astrid none of the companions in the current WHO have really 'died', they've just ended up in another universe, had their minds wiped, fallen in love or died simply of old age (although after being sent into the past). Unless you call Danny or Osgood a companion. Granted, not a lot of the companions died in the original series either (Only about four-Katarina, Sarah Kingdom, Kamelion and Adric, although the fate of some companions are unresolved such as Ace)

As for the Doctor himself, maybe we'll see more of the slightly darker side of this Doctor, plus why he seems to not like soldiers (with the exception of UNIT). Capaldi also said his Doctor has more of a relationship with time than the others, which we've sort of seen with "Listen" and "Kill the Moon" he seemed to predict things about the timeline (Although Mcgann's Doctor seemed to have this ability as well in the TV movie)

Any other thoughts/ideas?

It all depends on Moffat. Whether he carries on for another full season might decide how the series might go. Has it been announced either way?

Capaldi seemed to give the impression Gallifrey was lost and there was no way he'd be able to find it, given how he reacted to the Mistress telling him the she knew where it was. Would be nice to have some sort of search going on; he seems to have stopped all the mindless chalk scribblings which a lot of fans assumed as him trying to work out co-ordinates.

Daleks always seem to pop up, so I can expect at least a cameo there.

Cybermen have appeared in the penultimate episodes of the last four seasons. Wonder if they'll do that again.

I'd love a pure historical story...

Stronger than an implication. We know from those minisodes that it was the Eleventh Doctor who took River to see the Singing Towers, which is where she was given her screwdriver.

Anyway, as for season 9 speculation, given that it does mark ten years since the modern series began, I think this should be recognized in some way, preferably by bringing back a companion from the RTD era for an episode, perhaps even including an RTD alien like the Judoon or someone.

We've seen the Judoon twice in Matt Smith's era, although they were with other enemies/allies at the time (Pandorica Opens and Good Man Goes To War).

The Doctor seemed to not exactly remember what he did to Gallifrey, but Missy's clue gave him hope, and then pain...exactly what the Master likes to give the Doctor.

At some point, the Doctor will need to go to the Last Day of the Time War to join the other 12 Doctors and TARDISes to freeze Gallifrey. It might not be him helping to freeze Gallifrey, but trying to be on Gallifrey when it freezes so he can find it and free it. Or his being there is what sets the coordinates, so he picks were Gallifrey ends up rather than the 11th Doctor's plan that doesn't seem to account for that.

Daleks will show up at some point. If Peter Jackson is directing an episode, it will likely be that one.

Now that the Doctor has figured out who he is, and the writers can get a grasp on how Capaldi acts as the Doctor, the stories should flow better. The early writting for the 11th Doctor could have easily been the 10th Doctor, but it is harder for the 12th Doctor to pull off being the 11th Doctor. Mind you they are all the Doctor. It is just the actor gives each a slightly different take on it with the showrunner adding some quirks to each incarnation.

The Idiot in a Box to follow the Madman in a Box. The 12th Doctor has made more mistakes than usual. I was attributing that to being out of practise since he'd been on Trenzalor for 900 years.

And it is true, it will have been 10 years since "Rose". Now three Doctors later, he's still the man in the Police Box, saving worlds.

Tom Baker character in the 50th strongly hints that Gallifrey will be found and I suspect Moffat setting up that story will want to reslove it himself. I would like more stories far away from Earth and with more aliens next season. I would like an older companion and one final appeareance of River as she always saidsomething about him showing up with a new face for one more trip and then gave her a sonic screw driver.

Season 9 starts filming on January 12th, IIRC. Which is interesting for leaving us wondering whether the Xmas special will a) wrap up Clara's story and see her retire to look after that kid, or b) resolve her problems with some Xmas spirit and have her rejoin the Doctor - because whichever way it goes, the ending can't be undercut by her appearance or lack thereof on set for season 9, since it won't start filming until after the Special airs.

River mentioned that the Doctor had shown up with a "new haircut". The implication was that it was a new incarnation of the Doctor who took her out for their last date, however it's nebulous enough to leave it at Eleven having done so (per the minisode) and simply having had a haircut. OTOH, it's just as possible that she was talking about another incarnation and it was a subsequent time they went to that particular date spot. Still, Capaldi's Doctor really doesn't seem much for romantic entanglements in the River sense, so I'd settle for her interactions to be limited to the Doctor's first regenerative cycle's incarnations.

It would be nice to have more of a sense of closure with Clara- the last episode left things feeling unfinished. She was supposed to bear a child and take the name with Pink since the Time Traveler had that last name and said time travel ran in the family.

I do hope they leave the Daleks alone for a while- they have been over used. There are plenty of other classic enemies to reintroduce. The show has also been more Earth bound and really needs to get back out there and see what there is to see.

I would really like to see a conversation between this new Doctor and Captain Jack...

This will the Christmas special - she will either be with child or already had the child.

Didn't River say that she met several of his faces though? So far she has met only 2.

I wouldn't be surprised if Missy becomes a recurring big bad in the vein of the Pertwee / Delgado archnemesis thing. Moffatt has just that going over on Sherlock after all, why not keep going.

The entirety of the classic series 8 had the Master as the baddie. it would be an interesting change of pace to see a modern take on it, which has not been seen on this show as yet. I can even imagine Michelle Gomez taking a place int he title credits if that were the case..!

^ Letts and Dicks thought it was mistake, in retrospect, to have the Master in every episode. After all, you saw the Master being foiled again and again. It's a bit different when a villian is foiled repeatedly but there are gaps (the Daleks), but to lose so many times in a season doesn't make the villian look credible.

So, I think appearing in all stories would be overkill. However, I don't mind at all if Missy returns and plays a larger ongoing role. The problem this season was that they teased her identity all season long, and it just wasn't worth that kind of build up.

I'm certainly okay with Missy turning up once a season, she'd be recurring without being overused. Not that I'd have a problem with her turning up on a frequency similar to Roger Delgado or Anthony Ainley either.
