Were El-Aurians abilities against the Q ever explained?

I just saw "Q Who" and these scenes;

Did they ever explain this, maybe in a book I missed, or was that the end of it?

Yeah, TNG went out of the way to point out some back story between the two... then left it hanging. That was disappointing.

She does have the power to impale Q with a fork. Though generally the good guys aren't supposed to go around stabbing people... unarmed people at that.

If Guinan had some sort of ability that Q feared, it doesn't need to have been a common trait of her species. It may have been an exceptional ability. For example, maybe Guinan won some sort of wager against Q that involved him giving her the power to banish him.

The El-Aurians themselves weren't that powerful as a race since they were nearly wiped out by the Borg. Also one got his ass kicked by an old Kirk.

I love that scene. It's like two cats having a spat in the street.

Maybe Q was nervous that Guinan was going to pinch his nipples.

I know the books aren't canon, but didn't they imply that Guinan's uniqueness comes from her time in the Nexus?

I don't know how that would make her be able to combat Q though...

Soran was in the nexus. He didn't seem to have any of the time sensing whatever Guinan did.

I asked this in the TrekLit section once, and appereantly it's never been adressed in any of the novels. Kinda sucky.

Personally, I just think it's a case that Guinan and Q have met before in the past and never really liked one another. I don't think Guinan has any real defense against Q if he was to attack her, but she wasn't just going to stand there without putting up some kind of fight, even if it was totally pointless (better to go down fighting).

The claws-out gesture need not be any sort of a defense as such - perhaps it's just the standard El-Aurian expression of personal disgust or contempt? Why settle for giving your ex the finger when you can give ten?

Perhaps the Q are susceptible to those who simply believe they can hold their own against them.

Maybe the Q are beings of pure willpower.

^Picard's willpower has got to be up there, seeing all that he's capable of.

That sounds the most plausible and it explains Q's disgust toward Guinan.
