50 Years Ago Today - The Voyages Begin....

Time to celebrate, as today as today marks the 50th anniversary of the very first day of shooting of The Menagerie (and yes that is proper, as the name only got changed for video releases to differentiate it from the series two parter)

First up - The scenes with Captain Pike and Dr Boyce in Pike's cabin.

After that, they moved on to the transporter room. and the first scenes ever with Mr Spock.

Hope everyone chilled a little tranya for the occasion!

I ran the episode last night. Always need little excuse to do that.

Well, as I've always understood it, the pilot was originally "The Next Cage" and/or "The Cage" before being changed to "The Menagerie" during production. It became known to fans in general as "The Cage" in Allan Asherman's original 1981 edition of The Star Trek Compendium, where he made that distinction to easily differentiate the original pilot from the aired two-parter. Whether he had any official okay or advice to do it, I have no idea.

I prefer "The Menagerie" as a title, but considering we see almost nothing of the other species in the two part episode, "The Cage" would have been a more appropriate title, leaving "The Menagerie" for the unaired pilot. But, whatever. Happy birthday, Star Trek...

A cool bit of history.

Yup, a little tranya, and maybe something else, too.

Obviously, the world will consider 2016 to be our 50th anniversary, but if I recall correctly, James Bond's 50th came and went in 2012 without any great attention being paid.

I hope this board has a 50th. I'll be 87 and probably in need of a little pick-me-up. Anyway, we should mark our calendars.

I'm sure they never expected that what they did that day would assume the proportions that it has! So very cool.

Perhaps the Bond 50th was not a big deal because Bond--despite several culturally relevant films in the series--is not so fascinating anymore. The mystery and intrigue surrounding field-bound spies is long gone in a real world where intelligence is routinely discussed, argued and exposed in the 24 hour news cycle, while we have seen so many real spies outed, that the fiction of the dashing, sometimes ruthless womanizer is long past its cultural shelf life.

At least with the 50th of TOS, there's so many elements about it that fascinate, as it is set in a world no one alive today will ever see--much less enjoy technical marvels like transporters, giant FTL starships and alien civilizations, etc..

That adventure remains preserved, colorful, and has not been turned into something routinely explored in real life. You can still get lost in the fiction without saying--as some do about Bond--that "its not like that in real life."

Technically, Bond's 50th was in 2003.

But his point was about the anniversary--there was no notable celebration of the series, and that includes that box set of Blu Rays--which was going to happen anyway (like the other reissues of Bond titles).

but it was notable. there were all sorts of things released to celebrate the anniversary. trading cards, a documentary, a Bond Monopoly edition, cologne...not to mention it was on the cover of several magazines like Life, Entertainment Weekly, GQ...

Or David Gerrold in the first edition of The World of Star Trek.
