So you want to write a holo-program

There have been recent discussions involving holo-programs, various improvements in the technology, and what types of programs are available. Some of those include:

Entertainment (Dixon Hill, Captain Proton, Children's Stories, Vulcan Love Slave, etc.)

Sports: Parises Squares, Worf's Calisthentics Program, Tasha's Martial Arts Program, O'Brien's Kayaking, etc.

Historical Simulations: Famous Battles in History (Alamo, WWII), Important Moments in History (ENT: TATV), etc.

Environmental Simulations: Often of various planet landscapes.

Tactical and Training Exercises: Used in officer qualification tests, military planning.

Some of these programs appear to follow some sort of outline or script, while others appear to be holographic "sandboxes" to explore and do things (like Barclay's programs). I'm sure there are other possibilities and categories I'm forgetting.

Would you write a program that was fiction or non-fiction? Many of the programs we see are set in earlier time periods. I don't recall anything that might be truly considered science fiction for 24th century people, and possibly not even contemporary fiction.

My first thought was I'd do the sci-fi story I've been kicking around since 1998, but it's just more outer space stuff in a different universe, so that might not be exciting or interesting for them.

Maybe someone made a holo-adaptation of Meditations on a Crimson Shadow, the Cardassian novel set in a future where Cardassia is at war with the Klingons?

I'd do a helicopter (or some aircraft) journey over 15th Century North America. See what the place looked like before all of the buildings and freeways.

The number of programs I would write would be endless. The Matrix, LOTR, X-Men, Gears of War, Ghosts of Sparta, The Walking Dead, Avatar (both types), Game of thrones, Avengers, Star Fox, Metroid, Halo, every Elder Scrolls title... shall I continue?

I'd write historical programs that would let me be there for President Kennedy's inauguaration in 1962 and one to hear Martin Luther King give his "I Have a Dream" speech.

Two words: Interactive porn.

(Come on, folks, that's what we're all really thinking, right?)

I guess since I don't write and develop computer games because it's too complicated, I guess I wouldn't write and develop holodeck programs either. It would never be as simple as the TV show makes it look like. "Computer, create the character I want!" - ZING - "Perfect."

But I would love to see all the games I currently like as a holodeck game, with safety protocols of course. Man, that would be a blast.

But I guess playing Assassin's Creed would be extremely hard on the joints and muscles.

Re: So you want to write a holo-program

This is a great thread idea.

Interactive porn, that's pfft.. it's like eating, everyone would do it. Let's have something more personal or unique.

I would set myself up as a cult leader and QUEEN of a colony of folk all picked out personally by me for their attraction and appeal. You know every single person you ever thought "omg hot.." or wished you were in their league? Well I'd go for it, they'd all be there. The unreachable, the fictional, the beauties and the quirky mad ones. They would ALL adore me. And I'd let that program play out and see what it actually did to me, if I hated myself by the end of it or if I just hated all of them. It's a psyche test, and you might get a little bit fucked up by it but that is what makes it real unlike holo-holiday on holo-Risa.

And when I was done with that I'd pick a very different scenario.. perhaps I'm the slave in someone's Vulcan love slave program, I'm designing a program where I'm nothing but photons. At the whim of programmer who is photons himself but whose chaos programming means I really don't know where this is going.

Make stuff that potentially changes you. Everyones potential change is different.

And, when that buzz wears off, find a nice holo beach and hang out there until someone pulls the plug. How much do you have to pay to LIVE in a holodeck? You know there are people doing that.

It's all basically fast food and fun when we see it in Star Trek. Perhaps people like Barclay are the real explorers.

Certainly porn would be a priority.

If I survived that, I'd be the lead singer of some huge band and go on tour, or play quarterback and lead my team to the Super Bowl.

That's right, the UK is into corseted, high-heeled dominatrixes, aren't they?

Instead of owning a home that had a holodeck in one of the room, the holodeck would be all you had. You walk through the door and you're in a three metre square holo room, no kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, etc.

Luxury mansion, party shack on the beach, isolated treehouse in a endless forests, whatever you want that minute.

So remember to add toilet facilities to your program, even if it's just an outhouse on Cestus III.
