Spock's Brain- what the %*$(#% is Kirk doing??

At the very very end of this marvelous episode, at 49:37 in the original version (the remastered version, probably intentionally, cuts it out), McCoy gives Kirk this weird dial thing and Kirk starts cranking it like his life depends on it- has anyone else noticed this? What the @$*($(% is Kirk doing?

It always looked to me like a joke on Kirk's part. McCoy hands him the 'remote control' that was used to move Spock around throughout the episode, and he's trying to "shut Spock up" with it.

As far as it getting cut out of the remastered episode, I don't think they had a choice. To switch the new footage of the ship, they had to "dissolve" into it sooner to eliminate the old footage. You can see here that when Kirk really starts twisting the dial, the image starts to fade into the Enterprise:

I haven't seen the remastered version...but yeah it seems the joke gets lost!

A fine thing. They take Spock's brain back, leaving those poor helpless Eymorg down there after all those centuries of their torturing those poor Morg on the surface. Those captured Morg already down there with them aren't going to be too happy either.

It's even better like this.

Kirk will get them together with the People of Vaal, the Followers of Landru and all the other civilizations he's toppled... for their own good.

Those captured Morg already down there with them aren't going to be too happy either.

I'd say the smartest and brightest feature of "Spock's Brain" is the music score by Fred Steiner. There's a beautiful theme for Marj Dusay, some good fight music, and a couple of truly exciting end-of-act stingers.

Then at the very end when Kirk is cranking Spock's remote to shut him up, the cue is called "Spock's Fugue." This is some terrific, thinking-man's comedy scoring, its only fault being that it couldn't go on longer.

Sorry, but I have a totally unserious question: wasn't that device designed to send signals to Spock's nervous system that would normally have come from his brain? And wouldn't it still do that even with his brain back in his head? What was Kirk trying to do, see if he could become Spock's puppeteer? If so, just what was he about to make Spock do??????????????????????????????????

Ha ha, I thought of that when I was taking those screen grabs, CrazyMatt. Then I realized Spock wasn't wearing the head gear, so I guess it wouldn't work!

Would have been funny if Spock started doing the "Tweedledee & Tweedledum" dance step from "Plato's Stepchildren".

Sorry, CraztMatt, I didn't mean to be a wet hen. I just have trouble making fun of this, the most serious and meaningful of episodes!

McCoy: His brain is gone!
Kirk: Probably too much LDS.

Wet hen? As in "madder than a wet hen?"

(Sorry, I don't mean to be a wet blanket.)
