And I think even those countries who don't have an actual monarchy often aren't any more egalitarian. America was led by a Bush, followed by a Clinton, followed by a Bush, then almost followed by another Clinton, and whilst I'm not up to speed on current predictions for the next election, is it still possible it might end up Jeb vs Hilary?
Not to mention the fact that President Obama's family costs the US 20 times what the royal family costs the UK.

Can people even imagine England without a monarch?
I'm getting the impression that a lot of people can, yes.
Indeed, it's also a very pleasant thought.

It's not going to happen in the lifetime of anybody posting here, you can bet on that.

yeah, maybe by the time little George ascends to the throne, but that will likely be some time from now.

Frankly the Royals are more popular than they've been in a while, so I doubt they're going anywhere just yet
We'll see about that when King Chuck takes the throne!
Somebody, I think on Fox News, was wondering if they're just going to skip Charles altogether. Based on how long her mum stuck around, Liz is probably gonna live to be 105, and Charles will be doddering away in a nursing home by the time she croaks.

American tabloids have had her at death's door for years. One day she will die and they can say, "See, we were right!!!" A week before the birth of George one of them had a cover story about Camilla's reaction to the birth. I guess their timing was a bit off.

That theory's been floating around various places since at least his separation from Princess Di.

"Theory", or "wishful thinking"?

I don't know who "they" are supposed to be, but only Charles can "skip Charles".

It just occurred to me - rather belatedly, I know - that once Elizabeth passes, there'll be no more reigning British queens in my lifetime at least, maybe ever... and that's kind of a shame, really. Call me sentimental, but I much prefer such phrases as "God Save the Queen" and "Queen and Country" to their patriarchal counterparts...

Barring some King Ralph style disaster, you are right yes. But you never know.

Now correct me if I'm wrong, but when the baby grows up and eventually becomes King, he can choose any name he wants, isn't that right?

IIRC, if he chooses George like his birth name, he'll be King George VII. But he can pick any name (as can any king or queen), can't he?

Looking the men and women who do and did hold the British Throne, they've all chosen one of the name they were given at birth. Most went with their first names, but some chose their second or third names.

I don't understand the rules of the monarchy. Why can there be no other Queen in our lifetime?

The boys get pushed to the front of the queue. It'll be Charles, then his son William, then his son George. And if George has a son, he'll be next. And as sons come before brothers, even Charles' brothers will never get to be King.

Assuming each of them gets a long stint on the throne, it'll be Kings for a long while yet.
