Soccer referee stabs and kills player, fans stone and behead ref.

You hear a lot of crazy stuff regarding soccer fanatics overseas who are willing to kill other people over a game, but this incident just sounds unreal.

I wonder why it took a week for this story to get out.

Complete Yahoo! Sport article

.....

According to Correio24horas, it started when referee Octavio da Silva Catanhede Jordan (left) red-carded Josenir dos Santos Abreu.

Josenir refused to leave the field and proceeded to verbally abuse and assault Octavio.

The 20-year-old referee retaliated by stabbing the 31-year-old player multiple times with a ‘machete–like’ knife, that he was carrying on his person during the match.

Whilst Josenir was taken to hospital in critical condition, friends and relatives invaded the field – tying up the referee and torturing him.

Upon hearing the news that Josenir had died on arrival at a local hospital, Octavio was stoned to death on the field.

His body was then quartered, decapitated and his head was pierced on top of a stake.

I couldn't believe it when I read this earlier today. Referee stabs player so fans kill and then behead referee......

The BBC are carrying the story as well.

Remeber the WOrld Cup is due to be hosted in Brazil next year, this isn't exactly the kind of publicity Brazil or FIFA want.

Yes the match might have been held in a remote location.

Nope. Go to liveleak and do a search. There is some NSFW video of the incident.

When did beheading become a thing? It's like frickin' dark ages. Are they going to start eating hearts next?

I mean I get argumentative, passionate and belligerent about baseball at times... but dang. What is it about soccer that just makes people go collectively apeshit?

That boggles the mind. I thought the Soccer War (Honduras and El Salvador in 1969; fan zealousness was the catalyst, not the underlying cause) was odd, but this is truely bizzare behavior.
